@glass Images + Videos are uploaded to the instance you're on (in your and my case, #TypoSocial). So yeah, especially when it comes to videos I tend to link to it externally, instead of uploading it here.
That said, I'm sure @admin doesn't want us to feel constrained in using masto in any way, so I would say as long as it's a moderate amount of images (i.e. not dumping your whole camera roll) and not very large videos, it's totally fine!

@w__h_ I think the images are saved on the instance, which may or may not have a CDN, depending on the instance. For example, I believe #TypoSocial is sitting on a server in Switzerland, so it may indeed take some time if you are in Australia.
