What was the name of the popular TSR (terminate & stay resident) tool for DOS that popularized the whole TSR landscape back in the late 1980s?
I recall certain Norton Utilities were eventually available as TSRs, or they had a TSR as part of Norton, but I'm talking _before_ Norton did it.

I have been thinking of skills in Star Frontiers again thanks to recent discussions. I think the whole skill list and their varying ways of computing the chance is a bit too unwieldy in the Expanded rules.
So, I propose stick to base skill equals attribute as done in the Basic rules. A characters attribute is going to be between 30 to 70 (with possibly some species attribute bonus).
And to level up, what if a player can just spend 1 experience point to level up their skill 1 point? A typical encounter will only yield 1 or 2 experience points so it will still take a long time to get a skill up to 100.
Note, I would take away any system to increase attributes and just keep improvement to skills.

It is interesting to go back to the very early issues of White Dwarf magazine and see RPG luminaries speak of concepts I had to form on my own. In Issue #7 from June 1978, none other than Gary Gygax wrote an article entitled
THOUGHTS ON THE PROLIFERATION OF MAGIC ITEMS IN D&D
"First and foremost no magic items should ever be for sale in a D&D campaign! Never? Well, almost never. Let's leave the qualifiers for a bit later on and get t o the basics first. Magic items are the weight factors in the game. They can be the balance, they can overbalance. They are also the "plums" in the pie. Players immediately recognize the desirability of these items and evidence a strong wish to acquire as many as possible. They do so to assure character survival, but secretly hope for character dominance as well - either by the sheer power of the items or by employment of magic therein t o defeat and loot encountered monsters and rise In level accordingly. The game does not envision any easy access t o magic items, and the introduction of magic shops where players can purchase such is anethma."

I took a screenshot of Albie Fiore's setup behind the DM screen in the youtube video where he is running a game in 1980.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KoyUwWaLU0
He is running a (pretty damn good) adventure he wrote that is in White Dwarf issue 18, called The Halls of Tizun Thane.

I was flipping through the Fiend Folio, like I do sometimes, and I liked how there is a list of credits about who created a particular monster in the back. Albie Foire created quite a few monsters in there, and I got to wondering who he was. Which led to this BBC video from 1980 of him DMing a game of D&D with Steve Jackson (UK).

One quarter of TSR's artistic Fab Four gets the hardcover retrospective. Clyde Caldwell's Legacy Anthology collects 200 pieces spanning Ravenloft, the Gazetteers and Dragonlance. Kickstarter-exclusive, curated by the man himself. Live now through mid-April. #DnD #TSR #Kickstarter https://l.d20.ninja/beM87w

Tripura intensifies its war on drugs. A joint team of Sonamura Police and TSR destroyed illegal ganja cultivation worth ₹13.5 crore in Sepahijala forests, uprooting nearly 90,000 plants spread across 32 acres. Authorities say more such drives are on the way. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/multimedia/videos/135-crore-worth-ganja-destroyed-in-massive-anti-drug-drive-in-tripura-ha6214f3?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Tripura #AntiDrugDrive #GanjaSeizure #Sepahijala #TSR

random URL I've used before and stumbled on again: TSR & WotC Font FAQ: http://www.hahnlibrary.net/rpgs/tsrfonts.html
it so happens that the Jost font (https://indestructibletype.com/Jost.html, also on Google Fonts) is a very close facsimile to Futura, so I use it on my personal TTRPG stuff site.

How I survived Tim "Fucking" Kask's killer dungeons at a convention, in two parts.
TLDR: You didn't fuck around with TFK but he was a good DM.

When Mary Kirchoff became editor of Polyhedron Magazine for TSR, her introductory article had a sketch of her and some of her co-workers.
Mary Kirchoff in the center.
Frank Mentzer as the dark wizard with a magic pinky finger?
Jeff Grub as a lizard.
James Ward as a halfling with nun-chucks.
Not sure of the others. -
I have probably played Top Secret more than Gamma World. The old Top Secret, where most of the missions are set in the Cold War. Recent discussion of the Orient Express reminded me that I owned Top Secret Orient Express BITD.
What I had forgotten was there are little paper mini figs in the setting/adventure. I am pretty sure that the people in the pictures for the mini figs are TSR employees.
David Zeb Cook could be the top far right image.
Allen Hammock might be the first enemy agent.
Mary Kirchoff is maybe an enemy agent?
Jeff Grubb, Rose Estes, Merle Rasmussen might be in the passengers? -
@renegaderich @blackcoat I mean you've gotta keep in mind that in a very real sense, *all* #TTRPGs before #3eDnD (and even 3e to a certain extent) are effectively "indie games" and we understand the concept today.
#TSR was the biggest fish in the pond, but it was still a very small press. So games like Top Secret, Star Frontiers, and Amazing Engine are all effectively indie games.
#WorldOfDarkness? Indie. #GURPS? Indie. #Warhammer? Indie.
Almost all of those things that we look at as being huge monoliths today started out very very small.
It almost doesn't matter how deep you dig, you're gonna find more weirdness. Rifts was spawned from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and other Strangeness, the official licensed game for the Turtles brand at the time! There's a for-real Rocky and Bullwinkle TTRPG.
If you really want to see the expansive weirdness of the early days of the hobby, check out the #SystemMastery podcast:

Investors in Hilton Food Group (LON:HFG) have unfortunately lost 31% over the last five years

Did you know that in 1983, TSR created a Star Frontiers commercial? I didn't until this morning (I originally saw this on the Grognardia blog)

I found my old RPG dice at my parents' house yesterday. The yellow d4, red d6, green d8, blue d12 and white d20 came with my original Gamma World set. Pretty sure they're the exact same dice TSR included with Basic D&D sets back then. I believe the two small d10s came with Star Frontiers. #Dice #TSR #DnD #GammaWorld #StarFrontiers
