Today, the Linuxulator did its job, and it did it very well.
A client is experimenting with moving from Docker to FreeBSD and jails, and they seem very happy with it so far.
The issue is that part of their build process - as so often happens - relies on Node dependencies that only compile on Linux, macOS, etc., but not on FreeBSD, due to a missing binary that isn't provided for it. Currently, they build on their local machines and push the output to the server, but sometimes they need to make quick changes on the fly.

So, I set up a Linux jail (Ubuntu) using BastilleBSD, installed the dependencies, set up a bind mount, and granted them access to the jail. The result: now they can compile right from there too, improving their overall workflow.

The Linuxulator - and even more so, illumos's lx zones - are truly remarkable pieces of technology.

Reason i ask is because i don't have a friggin clue since i went in head first trying to build a fw / router with Tribblix

@ptribble @joany well i gave them a shot and all crap out , could be the USB part is like a red herring but the only close success i got was single user mode with #tribblix but that went into a loop too. :(

@BRicker I don't think it's really diverged much. #SunMicrosystems begat #OpenSolaris. Then Oracle unbegat it and the community begat #IllumOS by forking the last free release. There are then a bunch of distributions like #OmniOS and #Tribblix.

#Illumos (and thus #OmniOS, #SmartOS, #Tribblix, et al.) has #ifconfig as well.

Indeed, some of its tooling, such as for service management, has been stable since the late 1980s; whereas the BSDs went through some churn in this area in the 1990s and early 2000s.

We just provide #BSD like #freebsd #openbsd #netbsd #dragonflybsd #midnightbsd and several other ones, but also #opensolaris with #tribblix #omnios #openindiana. So, we’re also pretty niche and that’s totally fine ;)
