One of the things I'm going to miss most about Twitter, as it continues to slowly crumble, is that it gave me a chance to be informed and aware about the perspectives and in community conversations of people who don't have those conversations with a straight cis white guy.

I read a lot of the work of Black and/or feminist radicals from the past when I was growing up, but being able to see how those conversations exist in the 21st century really helps inform how I try to move through the world. Being able to get exposure to perspectives that aren't even represented in people I know has been really helpful. That's also been true of LGBTQ+ conversations, disability conversations (and as someone who has a severe mental illness that has been disabling, THOSE conversations have helped me put my own experiences in context) and a number of others has been basically life saving.

I've seen some folks expressing frustration with pushback about the idea of something like #BlackMastodon and I can't really stress enough how valuable it is to be exposed to the conversations being had in communities that don't get widespread exposure and whose experience of marginalization changes how they express things when they know "the whites/cis/straights/ableds" are the major audience. Coming to undamentally understand that not every conversation is "for me" and does not need my input, AND I can still learn from it, has opened up my perspective on more things than I can really express.

Iif folks are uncomfortable with seeing conversations about #BlackMastodon or #TransMastodon or whatever raises your hackles, just chill for a minute. Ask why you're uncomfortable. Ask if you're making it about you, when it's not really about YOU personally. Give it a few minutes. See where the conversation goes, because chances are, what's touching your nerve is the way people are expressing a real, rational, necessary frustration and anger, that isn't about you personally. It's bigger than you and the individual expressing it, and for folks like me, who are straight, white and cis, effects them in a direct way we don't see unless they point it out.

Anyway, I say this to throw up my flag/vote/whatever you want to call it, in support, and like, I can be a genuinely lovely person to know, unless you're a bigot. I don't do bigots.

I understand the want to have an us-versus-them kind of discussion when it comes to #Twitter and the #TwitterMigration. For me, there isn't that much of a resistance effort; I never used Twitter. I was eager to join a platform that seemed like it was more gauged towards my interests. I think one of the best ways we make a space like this inviting for the people that are migrating from Twitter is to do just that: create a space where you are genuine and honest in how you feel and what you make.

I see these things crop up in my feed saying that Mastodon should be a place where we "bend over backwards" for certain groups of people. In my opinion, not only does this come across as disingenuous, it's also disempowering. It presumes the premise that we, as a collective, determine the infrastructure and rules of this social network. The main thing that I would say to anyone that wants to join is that the spaces you create and join can be fully your own. You can have your own rules, federate with whomever you like, and connect with like-minded people. With giant monolithic conversations, there was always a line of toxicity that would try to corrupt that.

I would say that this message of empowerment for the creation of spaces is especially true for people coming from #BlackTwitter. #BlackMastodon is just #Mastodon. #TransMastodon is just #Mastodon. Is that erasure? No, it is reflecting on the fact that we've treated blackness and other such attributes as a monolith for far too long. Among subgroups, for example, Hispanic people, there is far more diversity that a lot of people give it credit for. Having a place where people engage in the discussions they want is not a function of someone's authenticity, Blackness, Latinidad, or anything else. It's just being human.
