Galingos ekonominės grupės tiek nacionaliniu, tiek tarptautiniu lygmeniu suformavo ir palaiko prekyba pagrįstą sistemą, kuri prioritetą teikia pelnui, o ne žmonių ir aplinkos gerovei, taip silpnindamos pastangas pereiti prie prekybos nereikalaujančių produktų ir paslaugų. Tyrėjai, aktyvistai ir kiti, skatinantys sistemas, grindžiamas prieinamumu, bendradarbiavimu ir pakankamumu, išlieka santykinai silpni, palyginti su šiomis organizuotomis interesų grupėmis.

Tai rodo, kad bandymai spręsti socialines, sveikatos ir aplinkos problemas prekyba pagrįstoje sistemoje – perkeliant atsakomybę individualiems vartotojams – kol kas yra iš esmės nepakankamas atsakas į klausimą: Kaip galime padaryti pokytį?

Tai taip pat rodo, kad būtini gilesni struktūriniai pokyčiai: perėjimas nuo prekyba grindžiamos gamybos ir paskirstymo prie sistemų, orientuotų į bendrą prieigą, tvarumą ir kolektyvinius poreikius.
