Perhaps instead of #ageverfication nonsense, those who want to protect the children should look at why these platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube and the like are "bad" for them and everyone else.
Here's why:
They are TRADING PLATFORMS. Not video hosting platforms, not social networks. NO. People have to trade their attention (watch ads), data, or currency to use these platforms who make over 90% or more of their profits from these trades. Is like calling a Mall a Social Gathering Event Hall. It is not!
At least they should force these platforms to be renamed/re-labeled.
And you know what else? The harm/addiction of these platforms is not solely their incentive to make people trade more (more ads, more data trading, etc.) to keep them on the platforms is the fact that in this society pretty much everyone has a shitty meaningless life. If people were to be taken care of, and not have to trade all of their lives in a boring and stupid job, with them being worth only when they consume, then smarter and relaxed humans would give 0 fucks about these platforms.
When you are out and about, with friends, are not stressed about how to pay for your life, then why do you give much of a shit to post and scroll on these silly platforms?
How come I do not give a flying fuck about these platforms and what people post on them? Because I am busy with more relevant shit!

Wanna change something?
REPLACE.
Replace these trading platforms with trade-free ones like Friendica, Peertube and the like. If you are a government, support them!
Replace the meaningless life of most people with meaningful ones. Give people their basic needs as trade-free. Via an UBI or trade-free basic services. This way you don't even have to support those trade-free platforms. People will! The same people who do it now, but who also have to struggle to have a day job in order to keep their work on these platforms going. Imagine having millions of people able to get involved and change this world!
Free people from the Trade-Society!
This way you don't even have to fight with these big corporations. Let them fade out! Let them die.

Check out videos.trom.tf/ - it is #trade-free meaning you don't need to pay anything to use it and upload videos and if it fits to the "ethos" of the instance, meaning the videos are about science/technology/nature, then you can simply register an account here (videos.trom.tf/signup) and should be accepted within a short period of time :)It is a super well managed instance by the @trom project where @tio is doing most of the work! :)

@Catha @EUCommission there are so many problems out there and I think it is relevant and necessary to talk about trade. As long as we base our society on this mechanism, it is like monopoly and and we see problems everywhere.

There is a new #friendica app github.com/LiveFastEatTrashRac… - looks super good and I've heard they are promoting our instance too since it is quite lively and reliable.
I only tested the app a bit since I do not use mu phone much, but hey @roko maybe you should give it a try! :) Maybe we finally have a great Friendica app :)

Powerful economic groups, at both national and international levels, have shaped and maintained a trade-based system that prioritises profit over human and ecological wellbeing, thereby undermining attempts to move towards trade-free products and services. Advocates, researchers and campaigners who promote systems based on access, cooperation and sufficiency remain relatively powerless compared with these organised interests.
This suggests that attempting to solve social, health and environmental problems within a trade-based framework—by placing responsibility on individual consumers—is, so far, a largely insufficient response to the question: How can we make a difference?
It also indicates that deeper structural change is required: a transition away from trade-driven production and distribution towards systems organised around shared access, sustainability and collective need. Such a transformation would require confronting entrenched economic power, dismantling profit-centred incentives, and challenging the political structures that sustain the current trade-based society—one which drives many of the problems it claims to solve.

Basic needs for everyone should be covered as #trade-free period. @trom explains in detail why #tradeistheproblem and the billionaires of this world are just symptoms of this trade game. That is great and frustrating at the same time. This "enshitification" is totally a natural result of trading stuff. There is 0 difference between supermarkets putting a 5.99 price on food, or putting candies where people stay in line to pay, or deceiving people with those old ads on TV, and Facebook, Youtube and the like adding clickable ads in the middle of a video or making it play the next video automatically, or not making it clear what is a post what is an ad....
These are trade-based goods and services, and for them to sell, you have to engage in these "marketing" practices.
THIS IS NOTHING NEW!
Pretty much all companies and individuals do these in order to sell shit. All need to be biased towards their own business. Even the local small businesses are doing it. Everyone does it.
So instead of selecting a few of the most outrageous practices, call them shitty, and point the finger at them, better do 2 things:
- Understand why these products are "shitty". It is trade, the need to trade, that makes people put more ads, collect more data, etc.. Currency, data, or attention trade.
- Simply make 2 categories: trade-free and trade-based. If a product or a service is trade-free, it means it does not want anything from you, the user. Not your data, not your currency, not your attention. Therefore why would it want to make that product or service shitty?
Makes no sense.

Of course this is an issue with our trade based society 100%. How? Easy:
- The incentive to do harm in this society is quite high. For profit, for power that also leads to profit, for the fact that tribes and people are divided into groups trying to outgame the other groups. Like Iran has an incentive to hack USA, USA has an incentive to hack China, Russia has an incentive to hack the EU, and so forth. They can get sensitive information, blackmail, etc.. This is a global situation that has trade (as a practice) as the director of motives. Making people do what they do. Tribes hold onto their own resources, exploit other tribes, etc.. And so fighting with each other is natural.
If we lived in a society where trading was not a necessity and provided for all equally, we would have no reason to have tribes with borders, exploit other tribes, fight against each other when we are all in fact a big tribe, the human tribe.
- The people working on a lot of open source software struggle to work on it since they also have "day jobs". They have to TRADE to survive. Imagine people had access to their basic needs trade-free, via an UBI or whatever. More time to focus on creating secure and better software, more people who can do that. Less of those incentivized to do harm and insert backdoors.
Overall it is a cancerous trade society where humans are livestock and wolves. Consuming and being consumed.
The only sane way out of it is to HELP PEOPLE DETACH FROM THE TRADE SOCIETY. So they can be people and focus on RELEVANT STUFF.
Else it is a game of those who want to exploit and those who try to stop them. Endless....

We've had to stick around the Girona region lately due to some doctor's appts, but luckily we found this gem of a place. Espai Natural de les Guilleries-Savassona, just south of the Pyrenees. Amazing place for hiking! And here we found a fantastic free motorhome parking area that even provided free electricity, so we're staying warm this winter 😊

We have updated our Peertube to version 7! Lots of cool stuff - read more here.
But the most important for us is the visual aspect. Now we are using the main and default and much improved Peertube themes (Dark/Light) with very very minimal changes (maybe 5 lines of CSS).
No more broken UI, no more being unable to have a proper dark theme, no headaches with every Peertube updated. They have made an awesome theme and we will go with that.
We need to promote this platform more often and I ask people to try and be a bit more brave ;) and prioritize Peertube. Post there like we do. Sure you may get less views, but you are growing a trade-free (saner) platform, and thus saner minds that do not have to be exposed to the tsunami of ads that Youtube infects every viewer with.

TROM.tf server updated to the latest Yunohost and Debian. However our Matrix server is currently not working, probably lots of database migrations are still on the way. Hopefully in a few hours it should work, if not there is some work to do to fix it.
TROM Send is not working - will see what can be done about that. For now it has been removed.
And we have removed our Pixelfed instance. It was setup for testing purposes and I, Tio do not have time to manage it. Plus the YNH package is not very up to date. Lastly, we are running very low on diskspace for TROM.tf so we need to only keep relevant and useful services.
If in the future someone from TROM wants to manage a Pixelfed instance we can fire one up ;).
There is a lot of work for TROM behind the scenes, so you know!
