I just gotcha my first, and prolly last Labubu today. It’s a blu one, gifted by my fam to me at the mall.
I’m kinda of grateful, but the whole experience feels strangely off-balance. There’s this odd mix of “this shi is hella cute-weird and meaningful” and “this belongs to a kind of hyper-consumerist pop-culture cycle I don’t want to be part of ffs.”
I specifically kind of avoided the blind-box model when they asked me to choose which one. I didn’t wanted the gamblin dynamic, the artificial rarity chase, or the emotional manipulation baked into that system. If I was going to receive one, I wanted it to be kind of an intentional thing, not lucky-driven.
Still, now that the fact I’m holding it, I can’t ignore the environmental side: the PVC, the long-term waste, the fact that these toys often end up as landfill even though they barely degrade. It’s kind of weird seeing something meant for kiddies marketed with “luxury scarcity” logic.
I’m kind of trying to reframe it as a memory instead of a product, something tied to a moment with my family, not a gateway into the whole collectible machinery.
The feeling is hella complicated, but at least it’s honest.
