  1. @paul_ipv6 That one may have come from one of these.

They were legendarily awful. Anonymous session musician covers of songs that had been in the UK charts (and, as such, on Top Of The Pops).

In particular I point you to Volume 60 for today's bit of hysterical music trivia...

  3. #TOTP #TopOfThePops

    I didn't know this existed.

Features Lulu with her #Eurovision winning song (very Jah! Jah! Ding Dong!) and Stevie Wonder live in the TOTP studio which definitely makes it a rarity.

  11. @stefano besides the quality of the music, what keeps on amazing me is how the produced with these massive tube cameras on cranes (also carrying a human operator) and fully linear recording.

there is a vibe to this style which is unmatched by any modern production.

(btw, if anyone has more gerat behind the scenes of shows from the analog era, please share. unless on yt, i suspect i already watched all they have for the relevant keywords)

  12. I was watching an old #TopOfThePops #TOTP from August 1979 and #JudieTzuke was singing her biggest hit. Unlike most acts, she was actually singing live! Very nice! youtu.be/ZZQoeCrsmO0?...

  13. #TOTP Watching an old #TopOfThePops from 1976. England Dan and John Ford Coley definitely at the cutting edge of fashion whilst singing 'I'd Really Love To See You Tonight'. The Detroit Spinners with 'The Rubberband Man' follows. Nice! PSA - it's a Savile show. youtu.be/z0M0v7NlE6o?...

  14. @barrd I would also have thrown Shout in there, coincidentally. Perhaps ‘Downtown’ (not the Abbey) from Petula Clark? Choosing just *ONE* of The Monkees (not a real band) oeuvre would be a tough one, but I’m rather fond of ‘Daydream Believer’. And, perhaps more obscurely, but an absolute gem, IMO: Elenore by The Turtles.

Pitch in, all you lurkers, and contribute.

  15. Musical Interlude: OK, I was all of seven years old when this song came out. I thought it was about some annoying guy who kept hanging around and wouldn't leave no matter how much you hinted. It was only when I hit college and heard it again that it dawned on me....

Even if the lyrics seen nonsensical, it's an addictive song, and I look back on myself singing it as a kid...oh my.

"Little Willy" performed by Sweet, on a 1972 episode of "Top of the Pops."

  16. Recent followers! Hello! Thanks for following.

Today is Friday. And in the UK it can only mean one thing*. BBC Four is repeating 2 hours of back-to-back episodes of the "classic" pop music show #TopOfThePops at 7pm. During this time it is likely I will toot sarcastic quips in a feeble attempt at humour.

If you aren't in the UK and/or you're not interested, it might be a good idea to mute the #TOTP tag.

If you are a fan of timed one time passwords, I'm so very sorry.

    *not necessarily true

  17. Hello people who have followed me in the last week. You are lovely. However, tonight is Friday night. And I'm in the UK. And I'm a GenX (the best generation).

All this means I shall be live tooting to the "classic" BBC TV show #TopOfThePops from 7pm until 9pm UK time using the hashtag #TOTP. If you aren't interested, now is the time to get out and either mute that tag, or unfollow. I hope you won't do either, and instead share the pain of 70s, 80s and 90s UK chart music.
