A More Comprehensive Version of the Three R's: things to do before trashing something
(I previously posted a seven-R version somewhere, but I forgot it)1. Refuse (before you buy it, check if you really need/want it)
2. Reduce (if you already have some, check if you really need another/more)
3. Reuse (if you already have it and it's still good)
4. Repair (if there are defects you can fix), a.k.a. Restore
5a. Reinvent (use it in a creative way, combine multiple working parts of broken items, etc.)
5b. Repurpose (use it for something else)
5c. Reclaim (scrap an unusuable item for its materials yourself, or bring it to someone who will), a.k.a. Recover, Recapture6. Recycle or Rot (bring it to an appropriate facility, or compost it yourself)
Trash is a last resort, and is not really free, merely out of sight out of mind. You end up paying for it in utility fees, pollution, or other social costs.

The second part of our exploration of chronic variable #stress studies is out!
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.09.26.615121v1
Here we look at studies employing chronic variable stress in rodents and explore how sample size was chosen. Of the 385 studies that we analysed, only one reported calculating sample size based on a biologically meaningful effect size and only 25% mention sample size at all.
A companion article where we analyse the relationship between protocols and reported effect size can be found here
