Nouvelle Vague, “This Is Not a Love Song” from Thievery Corporation’s remix album “Versions” (2006)

Remixes so often chop and distort the original track and overextend it to a THUMPA-THUMPA beat; I can see how that would be great in a club, but in any real listening setting? No thank you.

There are, however, a few producers I’ve come to trust to create beautiful, thoughtful remixes, and I count Thievery Corporation among them - and with their “Versions” we get an entire album of their remixes of other artists’ tracks.

Here we have Nouvelle Vague whose stock in trade is creating their own light, delightful lounge lizard-y versions of rock, punk, and post-punk songs, taking Public Image Limited’s brash outburst from cynical irony to self-parody, and then in the hands of Thievery Corp, further transformed into melancholic incantation.
