'Teru teru bōzu' (てるてる坊主 'shine shine monks') are simple dolls hung outside windows as a prayer for dry weather or an end to rain.
Originally used by farming communities, in the Edo period this tradition spread to towns and cities. It is not uncommon to see them here and there nowadays.

'Tsuyu' (梅雨) is a verdant, muggy and unpredictable time of year. It doesn't rain every day, but the season always seems to drag on.
