EDIT: It has found a home.
Free to a good home: One Hewlett Packard C2262A Storage System with seven SCSI drive bays. Two are currently populated by hard drives, one by a caddy-loading CD reader, and one by a tape drive. The faceplate of the CD reader had been held on by masking tape. 💿

I just had the idea of starting to experiment with tape drives for backups.
Someone stop me please

Cleaning and testing a 1531 tape drive. Courtesy of @eazy. This one only had mechanical issues. Watching a tape load is kind of mesmerizing.

The number of times yearly that I regret giving away my 5.25" floppy drive or my QIC tape drive to electronic recycling is NONZERO.

Sadly optical media standards don't grow with the need for more storage and whilst #TapeDrive|s do, modern versions of #LTO #Ultrium are absurdly expensive so unless one needs to backup Petabytes offline it doesn't make financial sense...
Personally I prefer the form factor of 3,5" #FDD|s but their abysmal capacity makes them rather useless these days.
Which is why I suggest to replace the magnetic film with a #SSD in the same shell:

Today, I #madethings. I am #uploading them. Now I #Sleep.
Tomorrow, I tell the server to #scrub itself. Our #zfs pool has been very slow all week. I am #worried.
I REALLY need a #tapedrive but it’s a couple of grand we don’t have.
In the meantime, have me being sarcastic about a stupid truck.

I've got one last retro computer post from the archives: when I got my Commodore 64 back in March 1989, I had only a tape drive - the 1530 Datasette -- in the first couple of weeks. It was so cumbersome and slow that it was soon followed by the 1541-II floppy drive. But I've still got the Datasette and a few tapes! Does anyone remember those games?

Anyone else here a fan of #tapedrive ? For me it's by far the cheapest way to store just about anything... I can still find new LTO-3 tapes (400-800 GB) on ebay for under 10 EUR and I only payed 50 EUR for this old HP drive :-) I wrote a few scripts to do regular automated backups of our server that are also logged and reported in emails
