  18. Hey guys, I'm not so #newhere on the fediverse but I now have my own instance, #gotosocial running here, using #phanpy

    introduction
Here are some stuff about me:

    • #linux user since 13th July 2015; #opensuse enjoyed since the 1sr of January 2026.
    • #scifi is my passion;
    • I may be hobbit -ing sometimes, I like it very much; may be practicing #bushcraft in the future.
    • I'm a kind of reasonable #prepper always having an EDC with me. Soon be certified first aid guy.
    • Hardcore scifi reader, I sometimes watch some films or play some video games.
    • I'm going to write in French, English and 汉语.
    • I strongly love the chinese culture, I practice #calligraphy chen style #taijiquan and have no problem to eat spicy food #china #中国
    • I still have this project of making a debian based distro, no gui, CLI/TUI only, with the only purpose of writing, so with vim, Doom emacs+orgmode+orgroam, and a CLI smolnet client installed by default. I have no idea about how to do this though.

    What is HardTech?
Hardtech is a #scifi project I have: a scifi documentation website; a website that describes in details fictional technologies. A kind of user manual for a spacecraft/space station.
The aesthetics are rusty, unsafe, industrial. You must see wires in the spaceships/space station, you must not feel safe when you're on board. Main colors are various orange and black.

    Hardtech is LowTech

Why? Because HardTech needs to know technologies in details to make them understandable for other people, but needs to stay technical and cryptic enough to keep the sense of wonder.

I hope you will enjoy following this account.

  19. I used to say - in jest - that it took 25 years of Tai Chi before I began to learn how to breathe.

Now, after 40+ years of Tai Chi, it seems - to my great pleasure and surprise - that I'm about to begin to learn how to walk.

  20. Knowing when to stop is really important.
"'qi gives rise to life; life to thought; thought to knowledge; knowledge to stopping' outlines an early psychology. Awareness matures toward restraint. The highest knowing is not accumulation but the ability to stop at the appropriate point."

    “Prophylaxe, Therapie, Uralte Chinesische Weisheit“.

  23. The origins of Tai Chi have long been shrouded in mystery and guesswork.

This article from Journal of Taiji Science convincingly tracks down the origin of the Tai Chi classics by way of the Li family Genealogy.

It seems that Chen style Tai Chi was created in 1634 at the Thousand Year Temple in Tang Village by two Li brothers and their Chen cousin.

The names of the Yang style movements, however, seem to originate with an even older document.

  25. It is interesting to see how #TaiChi / #TaiJiQuan cultural influence goes beyond "common" spots such as #KungFu action or fantasy movies. In the #StarTrek universe there is moQbara - the Klingon #martialArt inspired by Taijiquan.

  27. Why #TaiChi Drifted from Combat: History, Culture, and the Martial Identity Divide
    daoofthewarrior.blogspot.com/2

// If future generations of #Taiji practitioners can comfortably say, “I practice #Taijiquan, a martial art that also cultivates health and clarity,” the long detour away from martial identity will have done its work. It ... preserved its subtle methods, and perhaps made it strong enough to stand again as both boxing and meditation, both method of self-defense and method of living. //

  28. Just finished three days of #TaiChi classes with Master Tung Chen Wei. Enjoyed it a lot and learned quite a bit too.
One of the things we did today was San Bo (Three steps), Last time I did San Bo was in 1995 or so, but it's apparently like riding a bicycle - once you got it, it sticks with you 😊☯️

  29. Main impressions from my today First Third practice are about how big can be the differences brought by the small changes.
For example, if strong wind blows under different angle than few months before during summer windy-day experience.
Or how differently Wardoff Left or Right happens if you step on a tiny pebble of gravel.

  32. @cd_newton Welcome!
You get paid for work in a charity?
teacher here, mostly Old Yang Style.

  33. Today was World #TaiChi day, so we did some #taijiquan in the garden.
It turns out it is surprisingly difficult to get a good still photo of Push Hands training (Tui Shou), but this one is at least amusing.
Push Hands trains sensitivity, listening, adhering and following skills; how to receive and redirect force without tensing up and resisting using strength.
It embodies a key principle of #Taiji, that of "Investing in loss", learning from failure rather than becoming obsessed with 'winning'.

  34. @MikeFromLFE @skinnylatte I teach #Taijiquan in the Midlands, and after thirty years still consider myself an intermediate, and learn new stuff every month.
My instructor used to say it was the study of a lifetime, if you were lucky then just the one!

  35. @monospace Yes, I teach #Aikido (mostly Tamura-ha) and #Taijiquan (mostly traditional Yang style).
I also have a background in Iaido, Jodo and...

This is the first English language reference I have found for Shu-Ha-Ri, and is I believe the link that made it's way into the Agile movement via Alistair Cockburn in the late 90s via nntp and various mailing lists related to software methodology at the time, that I may have inadvertently been a catalyst for.

  36. @RaymondPierreL3 @paelse The comment "There's nothing Taoist about it" seems really disconnected from the reality I've experienced.
Both lineages I've been taught, and the vast majority of what I've read about various different styles of #Taijiquan have directly referenced its Taoist origins, and its deep connection and embodiment of Taoist philosophy and principles.
Whether this is its origins in Wudang, or the prime component of its name, the Taijitu, or the embodiment of the principles in the form (Wuwei, the three treasures, non-action, Yin/Yang, flow etc.) it's very much an embodiment of Taoism.
To say "my style of Taijiquan is Taoist, but yours isn't" seems at best dismissive.
I assume you don't mean to offend.
Again, not having practiced Moy Lin-Shin's style I can't directly compare.
My suspicion is that there is far less distance between his style and traditional Chen and Yang teachings than is being asserted.
