  1. A 71yr old women was hit-and-run while crossing Sydney Rd (near Barkly St) yesterday.

Police are yet to locate the driver but have CCTV footage of them.

Sydney Rd is a major shopping street where people need to access shops on both sides of the street. This women was crossing 100m from the nearest southern pedestrian crossing and 150m from the nearest northern crossing.

Sydney Rd is busy and difficult to cross because there is no space in the middle to safely wait. When I cross I wait a long time for both ways to be clear or for traffic to backup.

For a 71yr old this isn't possible because it requires that you can move pretty fast.

The fact that it's 40km/h is probably what prevented this crash from being instantly deadly.

For such a dense shopping street (there are 1800 shops along here) it's absurd that there isn't a crossing every 50m.

  6. Lack of safe bicycle infrastructure and accessible tram stops as #Brunswick level crossing removal works start in 2028.
Detours when #Upfield railway path is closed are very poor, we'd like safe protected bike lanes on #SydneyRd instead.
#Critical Mass meet 5:30pm at the State Library on Friday 24th April and slowly riding in a large group North via Sydney Rd and finishing at Bulleke-bek Park (West St/Breese St)
    merri-bek.vic.gov.au/exploring
for some speeches (and to a pub for a beer).

  11. At the Sydney rd Accessible Tram Stops rally today in Coburg. A good turnout in the rain. We handed out leaflets and talked to people about the problem of accessible transport for people when the Upfield line is closed for level crossing removals in 2028.

  12. We're waiting at Brunswick Rd tram stop for an accessible tram to do leafleting of people on the tram. We've been waiting for 20mins, only 10mins to go.

  13. Music in the side streets and the carpark the council recently turned into a park for people is really going off.

  14. Almost all the shops on Sydney Rd have street frontage of less than the length of 1 car park (the widest shops 2).
You can park for an insane 2 hours during the week...on Sunday (today) you can just park all day.

There were at least 10 people in that ChaTime and the car out the front could have been parked there all day.

For additional stupid the parking is a clearway during peak times which means you can't stop to pick something up when you're driving to or from work. So the shops don't get anything from most of the car traffic.

Sydney Rd is clearly a street designed around trams that has been slowly strangled by cars over the last 50yrs.
