Back in March I went through the two editions of Fever Swamp by Luke Gearing and compared them in detail. I posted a bit of that here already: https://dice.camp/@martin/tagged/feverswamp
I have finally written up my full comparison as a blog post:

The text is largely the same, but where it has been punched up the change is really worth having. Contrast these descriptions of a ruined house's contents (old on the left, new on the right).
If I roll the old one on the table, I need to improvise what it's like to explore the ruin - or just abstract away the looting. The new one adds more flavour both to the environment and to the item, *and* sets up future interactions.

Oh that's a fun new detail: "Within [the scumboggle] hive, suspended using vines, a single cow, hand-fed the rich vegetation of the swamp. If recovered, the cow’s cheese is of excellent quality – the cow is worth 350gp."
Scumboggles (pictured) are small amphibious cannibal goblins who love cheese.

I'm comparing the old (2017) and new (2024) editions of Fever Swamp and I'm not loving the new art and design.
The old hex map (left) is brighter, more characterful and easier to read. And the typography and layout in the new key (right) is dull by comparison.
Perhaps the aim was to reduce printing costs / improve ease of home printing? Removing the yellow tinge to the paper is probably a good idea, but overall, it's a shame.

Turns out there's a new updated version - I should take a look at that too!

A creepy tidbit from Fever Swamp, a swampcrawl module by Luke Gearing:
"These spirits of lost children are desperate for a light to lead them home. Their shadowy forms clamber through the trees, their large, blank faces staring greedily from above. Once the time is right, they reach down, snatching any candles, lanterns and oil before hurriedly fleeing. They can be pacified with sweet treats. They will not try to fight."

I ran a one session swamp crawl a few years ago. In places it was shallow enough to walk, but that generally went by raft. All kinds of nasty things hide under the surface - they encountered giant leeches when they stopped to investigate a tunnel of water suspended by magic.
The town they encountered was built around and on top of a spire of rock, with cranes and pullies for transporting boats up to the lowest levels.
Have you run anything cool in a swamp setting?

I am posting too much of Gnarlyghost's work (with their permission!) but just look at this! This makes me so excited to play a swampcrawl adventure.
