  1. Three things that I am grateful for today ...

🍂 ... New England in October is quintessential New England.

    🍂 ... #SunshineSadie
Is having a grand time with her buddy Jack the whippet.

🍂 ... my friends for taking such good care of Sadie.

  2. Three things that I am grateful for today ...

🍂 ... my 12:30 appointment was cancelled so I got to take #SunshineSadie for a nice long walk along the river instead.

🍂 ... it's been a week since I cut out wheat, eggs, dairy (except for cream in my coffee), and soy. I'm actually starting to feel better.

🍂 ... I've been clearing out things that I don't use anymore so today I gave away the air fryer. Yay for less clutter.

  3. I have a four-hour medical test on Friday morning at 8am. That means leaving the house a little after 7. That also means ...

Driving an hour and a half on Thursday to drop off #SunshineSadie at a friend's house where she feels comfortable - then driving an hour and a half back home.

Then ... driving to the medical appointment on Friday morning, driving back down to my friend's house to pick up Sadie and driving back home again.

This will be the first time that Sadie has been separated from me overnight since August 2019.

I'm anxious about the test, I'm anxious about all that driving, and I am super anxious about how Sadie will be.

I'm sure Sadie will be fine, she loves my friends and she loves their dog. I don't know why I'm so whiny about driving since I've actually driven cross-country all by myself seven times. And the test is lengthy but not at all invasive.

I suppose I could back out on the test and cancel it tomorrow. I like having options even if I know I won't really take them.

  4. Three things that I am grateful for today ...

🍂 ... yellow leaves twinkling in the sunshine like falling stars floating gently to the earth.

🍂 ... when the sportsball teams on the athletic fields below my apartment leave and take all the noise with them ~ leaving the silence of rustling leaves and calling crows.

🍂 ... the exuberant joy of #SunshineSadie when her small desires are so easily fulfilled: a walk, a treat, a meal, belly rubs.

  5. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 A perfect autumn day with clear blue skies, turning leaves, a chill in the air.

🌺 Chatting outside in the courtyard with a new neighbor while #SunshineSadie kept her focus on the local squirrel population. Realizing we've had a lot of similar life experiences and a lot of very very dissimilar ones, and even so we might be becoming friends.

🌺 I'm starting to get a handle on the potential in this food allergy situation.

  6. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 Right outside my back door, on any day, I might see deer, fox, bobcats, and yes even bears.

🌺 My friends are on their way back from their cross-country trip, just in time for them to take #SunshineSadie overnight while I go in for an early morning medical test next week.

🌺 Learning to be comfortable saying: no, I'm really not up for that today.

  7. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 Walking in a misty light rain this morning with #SunshineSadie, the mountains slightly veiled with fog.

🌺 All day I've been feeling down, slipping into a darker place than usual. It's familiar and I know how to ride this wave to the other side. Then I realized, after an unresistable nap, that I am coming down with some kind of flu-ish viral-y thing. Easier to deal with for sure.

    🌺 Chicken broth and saltines.

  8. #SunshineSadie had a little meltdown on our afternoon walk. There was a German Shepherd walking very nicely on leash with its human, and then they started to walk in our little senior housing neighborhood.

They were walking on her sidewalk! They were walking on her grass!!

I have never heard the variety of noises that she made along with barking and whining and growling. I have never seen her do that with another dog. She probably didn't appreciate that I was laughing at her. Silly dog.

  9. Riverwalking today with #SunshineSadie. I know tomorrow is the official autumn equinox but today was plenty autumny - a nice breeze and in the low 60s with a delightfully dry air.

Given the lack of rain over the summer I don't think we'll be seeing much color in the Berkshires. (I would like to be wrong)

  10. As #SunshineSadie and I were walking home from our evening stroll I heard the Canada geese calling on their way to the marsh below our home. I stopped to watch them fly overhead and Sadie did too.

I suddenly remembered the very first time she saw geese flying. She was about seven months old. It was the end of October 2019. We were driving from New Mexico up to the Puget Sound. I think we were stopping overnight in Colorado.

She looked up and seemed awestruck - she glanced at me as if to say, look! there are huge animals in the sky!

  11. Three things I am grateful for today:

🌺 Wind sweeping fallen autumn leaves from the bridge into the swiftly flowing river waters below.

🌺 Chinese takeout for those days when I just can't get it together to cook.

    🌺 My extremely silly #SunshineSadie.

  12. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 My windows were open this morning to a cooling breeze - it's so nice to have some fresh air after a summer of almost constant a/c.

🌺 Sitting on my patio after a walk through the neighborhood with #SunshineSadie and watching the clouds form and reform and merge and separate and grow and dissipate ... change ... change ... change ... wondering if there are beings so vast who can look on the critters of the Earth and say look, there's a pony and there's a smiling dog and there's a human dancing and there's a turtle and there's a phoenix ... everything is in flux and malleable.

🌺 Sadie's great joy in her new Highland cow stuffed squeaky toy. All of her toys have their own unique name and this is her new Moo Coo.

  13. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 Enormous, heavy, dark clouds sailing ponderously into the east leaving behind fragments of blue sky in their wake.

🌺 #SunshineSadie's clear delight in running about sniffing every nook and cranny on our walk this morning - every day is filled with new scents.

🌺 I baked a cake! First time in years. (It was awful but that's okay - I think it's the antibiotics messing with my taste buds - even the local farm's lettuce tastes weird).

  14. Hanging out on the couch for belly scritches before we head out for our last walk. #SunshineSadie

  15. Three things that I am grateful for today:

🌺 My neighbor told me that I am a good friend to the people in the building because I listen to them and am helpful.

🌺 I used to joke that I had a brown thumb with houseplants but I am amazed at how lush and beautiful all my houseplants are.

🌺 Watching little #SunshineSadie sleeping with loose-limbed abandon.

  16. She's thinking about coming out from behind the chair.

There's still lots of rain but no thunder for now.

  17. Blue skies and sunshine on my morning walk with #SunshineSadie

  18. It's time to celebrate the day 🎉 7 years ago, when a little pup wandered out of the high desert in New Mexico and burrowed into my heart.

  19. Day 6 of vertigo + migraine and all the associated symptoms. I feel so bad for #SunshineSadie - our walks are necessarily too short for her. I'm mostly ok if I stay very still and quiet and move slowly when it's necessary. I hope it's resolved soon.

  20. @OkieSpaceQueen When I took #SunshineSadie for her early morning walk, the valley was filled with rising mist covering everything but the tops of the green mountains of Vermont. Beauty is always positive.

  21. Somebody saw a squirrel. Instead of running around the metal gate, I think she got confused in her decision-tree about whether to jump over or through until she slammed into the gate and then tumbled over in the grass.

We had a long quiet rest in the grass afterwards. She seems to be fine, no limping.

Otherwise, it's a beautiful day here in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. #SunshineSadie

  22. The weather is shifting between torrential downpours and light drizzle with scary sky booms rolling back and forth across the valley. #SunshineSadie is not having much fun today.

  23. Sadie and I spent the day with our friends and their dog Jack, the whippet. The dogs had a blast running and chasing each other and playing in the pond. It was a perfect summer day in the Berkshires, in the low 70s with a nice breeze plenty of sunshine and fluffy clouds. But we were also very happy to come home at the end of the day.

  24. On my way to my neurologist to get baseline testing for dementia /Alzheimer's. I don't think I have any symptoms but at 68 and living alone ( #SunshineSadie doesn't seem to notice these things) I figure a baseline would be good and then test every seven years or so - or if things get very weird.

Update: I passed! I did as well as Trump, maybe even better 🤣
She said my memory is perfectly average and any problems I might have with it right now is likely due to my ADD brain running off in 58 different directions.

  25. @kimlockhartga yeah, constant physical pain has been part of my life for 30+ years. I don't know what the initial trigger was, maybe a viral infection?

I don't think about what it might be like to be pain-free any longer, just about how to manage it in the least intrusive way. Because it intrudes into day-to-day life, into relationships with friends and family, into what kind of work I could do, how I can take care of my #SunshineSadie.

I've decided not to intrude through more medication or invasive physical procedures or tests. And that has given me the opportunity to have a better relationship with my body - not mediated by others.

It doesn't get you out of what needs to be done, and it doesn't get you out of the judgment from other people because it's all invisible. And I don't need to or want to put on a song and dance about how my life experience is so challenging. Everyone's life is challenging in some way and most of it is invisible.

I think about our ancestors - recent or back in the distant past - and the physical pain that they've had to endure that would be unthinkable to most of us today.

So my life is smaller in the exterior sense but it's oddly better in the interior sense. I'm more at peace, I enjoy myself and I enjoy the people who I choose to spend time with a lot more.

  26. What's around the bend, asks #SunshineSadie.
    I don't know, I say.
Let's go find out, she says.
