Indeed, the girl in question was directing doe eyes at me. The sobriety of prayer was nowhere to be found in them. If I were staying, both the scholar and I would have had to worry about her virtue.
After that, dinner was surprisingly uneventful. My hosts and I didn’t share a common language, so I was not obliged to talk with them. The tutor refrained from religious #sparring, though he started a conversation. Whether it was to trip me up or he was genuinely seeking information, I never knew. He began by asking, “What news have the Marseille Copts received of the Crusades?”
“That Salah ad-Din had retaken the Jerusalem, but that a vast host of English and Frankish soldiers are poised to retake it at any moment,” I said. “We hadn’t learned that Cyprus had been seized, or that Richard had sold it to the Templars.”
“And what do you think of the holy war?”
Rather than answering the more fraught question of my personal opinion, I chose to answer the question: “What did my community think?”
“Many hope to see the lands in Christian hands, and others are just glad to be rid of those whose violence spills into the streets of our cities.”
My host said something to the tutor, who fell silent, giving me a #break from the questioning.

Una vetllada que de fa anys es va començar a organitzar des de la Biblio Espontània de l'ateneu, i avui ja és tota una tradició.

Com funciona?
Proposem passar una vetllada on qui vulgui reciti, canti, digui... tot s'hi val. I com sempre, amb un seguit de temes que us inspirin:
Humitats o tota l’aigua que brolla. De la saó que fa germinar a les inundacions i totes les «humitats personals»
Intel·ligència natural, contrària a l'artificial. Per una educació digna i decent (- ratios i + recursos)
No passaran, perquè som antifeixistes. Contra les dretes extremes i l’imperialisme.
Cos-territori o totes les identitats, que ens conformen i ens deformen o ens fan ser.
Barri o la supervivència d’un nosaltres, de comunitat, d'amistat i un sostre que ens aixopluga
No a les guerres i no a tot al rearmament. Free palestine.
Barra lliure i tot el que pugueu i vulgueu imaginar

Just had my first karate sparring match(es). I had no idea what to expect, and spent the whole afternoon freaked out that I was going to get punched in the face.
And I did get punched in the face. And kicked in the head. And took a gunshot of a kick to the chest. And now I'm wrestling with the fact that, not only am I fine, but my reaction to it all - especially the kick to the chest - was "do it again".
WTF is wrong with the human brain?!?

Man, bone on bone incidents at #karate appear to be my life lately. For about 20 mins at the start of each of our karate classes we do light #sparring where you wear foot and hand guards and throw soft contact punches, backfists and kicks. Four people now have tried kicking me only for me to do the simple block for it which is just to raise your knee to catch the kick(aka leg-check). Inevitably their knee or shin hits mine because they’ve got their range wrong and they collapse in pain or wince and limp for a bit. My shins are busted up because of years of this and I don’t really feel much pain anymore. BUT all-new tonight, someone tried a kick as I had my hands up and we clashed my-elbow to his-kneecap. FARK. It was close enough to the funny bone that my arm was half-tingling, and the elbow is STILL sore. If it had hit my FB full on it wouldn’t have been good *at all*. The poor kid took it like a champ. Wondering now, do I need elbow pads as well? 😖
