Juan Bronco, lawyer for the detained Senegalese opposition leader, has been arrested on the border with #Mauritania, where he was trying to escape.

Bronco has been the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Senegalese courts since July 14, in connection with the riots that rocked the country following #Sonko's conviction.

PS. you don't hear much noise from #EU or #US about Senegal.

The government in #Senegal has dissolved the main #opposition party, following the #detention of its leader, Ousmane #Sonko. The interior minister said the party, #Pastef, had been rallying supporters towards an insurrection. Mr Sonko has appeared in court and been remanded in custody, charged with plotting an #insurrection, criminal conspiracy and other offences. He denies the charges, saying they're politically motivated

Clashes ahead of Senegal opposition leader's trial

Police in Senegal fired tear gas and stun grenades at people demonstrating in the capital, #Dakar, on the eve of a trial of an opposition leader.

Authorities have banned protests relating to Thursday's resumption of Ousmane #Sonko's court case, but the main opposition coalition says it will defy the restrictions.

Sonko is accused of defaming the tourism minister Mame Mbaye Niang with allegations of embezzlement. He denies the charges. If found guilty, Sonko would be barred from running in next year's presidential election.
