Couldn't resist starting to knit with the yarn. It's fiber than standard sock yarn, but denser as it had the same amount of meters per 100g.

I dropped to 2mm needles and it's still not that tight a gauge. And it's springy, the opposing ply really plays nicely here.

I picked a lace stitch with a 19 st repeat and went up to 76 sts.

    Done. Finally.

I don't remember when it took me so long to knit a pair of socks, but I'm more into spinning lately.

They have a nice fit and the lace pattern comes out really nice. I like them (and they are mine!)

One being on a sock board and the other not shows the amount of negative ease I'm going for with socks.

  4. Trying to gain confidence for Argyle socks I was very much inspired by “just StitchFiddle it” @leonieke and “a day without Nintendo is a day not lived” @Sobtanian to practice intarsia in the round on these socks that will probably make the wearer invincible.

  5. Socks for my niece are done! It’s the most recent box of the Stiches and Cream sock club. Really enjoyed the lace panel, which is way less complicated than it looks, my favourite ;)

  6. I can no longer be coy about the sock pattern that I'm knitting. It's Dehnungsfuge!

    ravel.me/dehnungsfuge

"Dehnungsfuge" means "expansion joint" in German, and the pattern includes a triangular bit of increases above the heel. According to the pattern, this solves the problem with traditional short row heels that "need extra stitches for the instep."

(Not having knit any socks before, let alone a GSRH, I'll have to take the pattern at its word.)

You can also see the expansion joint in the previous post, which was made just before I started the heel.

I chose this pattern because I liked the design concept that has ribs separating and re-joining to create swooping patterns wrapping around the foot, achieved with a relatively straight forward series of increases and decreases.

However, the curves are a bit more abrupt on my foot than in the design photos. I already have ideas for improvements! I'm nearly done -- should finish the toe today -- and I'm already debating whether to complete the pair following this pattern or to start a NEW pair with modifications of my own.

Most of the vacation it was just too hot to knit socks. Even inside, even with AC.

About 2 hours before we get home it's finally (temporarily) cooled down a bit.

  8. Making progress on the Mystery Sock ™️ project again! I'm probably far enough along now that someone who's knit this pattern will recognize it. So the question is: how obscure is this pattern? 👀

Just finished an expansion joint prior to the official start of the heel. Right- and Left-Leaning Increases at work here.

It's quite tight going over the heel, but once over, it fits well. I went with the M pattern for the diameter (but XL for length), but I suspect that L (diameter) might have been the best overall fit. Of course, that all could change after blocking.

I'm adjusting better to the magic circle technique. It's more of a break in rhythm when switching needles and pulling cables through, compared to DPNs, but for this pattern, being able to split the stitches between Front and Back means fewer stitch markers to wrangle (and frequently lose). Also flexible cables are much better for trying the sock on than DPNs!

I could see FlexiFlips working really well for this pattern, were it not for the tight fit. If this first sock turns out wearable, I might pick up some 2.25 mm flips for the second.

  9. Let’s see how ramie and silk works in place of nylon in sock for long-term wearability - Filzrausch Mailand. Also trying to get over my fear of cabling - Imker by Apella.knits.

Changing my needle library to be fully wooden fixed cables (these are KnitPro). My usual metal chiagoo is a bit too cruel on my fingers and wrists and frustrating when they screw apart.

  10. A question for sock knitters:

If you're knitting top-down with ribbing at the top, and your pattern doesn't specify a cast-on method, do you cast on in pattern (i.e. matching knit and purl)? Or do you just cast on straight knit stitches (or purl) and start the ribbing in the next round?

    What method do you use?

  11. Sock swatch completed!

I have chosen a sock pattern for my first socks! (Actual pattern to remain mysterious for now 🕵️ ) This is Malabrigo Camaleon sock yarn. Pattern calls for 30 sts/10cm, ~42 round/10cm. The swatch has 2.75 mm needles for the main swatch and 3.25 and 2.50 half-swatches on the sides. (It was supposed to be 2.25 for the smallest, but I screwed up!)

    Swatch is 28 sp10cm for 3.25 mm / 32 sp10cm for 2.75 mm / 33 sp10cm for 2.50 mm. Rows/rounds are 44, 48, 52 respectively per 10cm.

So, clearly 3.0 mm needles would hit the stitch gauge perfectly, but at shorter rows (= shorter sock calf height). I don't have 3.0 mm circulars (for which the pattern is written) but I DO have 3.0 mm DPMs.

Still, I like the nice tight stitches of the smaller needles, so I'm very tempted to go with 2.50 mm needles and +1 size larger pattern than my shoe size would recommend. (XL vs. L for EU 45 shoe).

Let's just cast on and see how this goes!

Last part of the travel route to our holiday destination. The foot needs 3 more repeats until I can make the toe.

5 hours of driving today, should be doable (unless I fall asleep)
