Just finished watching this excellent PBS doc about AI: https://youtu.be/dLQzVLtvdv8
It starts out by tracing the roots of AI to eugenics, which I think is exactly right.
A lot to think about after watching it (I especially appreciated all the great archival footage they had and the fact that they brought on historians and critical theorists to comment).
But I'm still left with the question: "but why? Why try to make super intelligent AI?"
The way I see it, the problems in our world aren't for lack of *intelligence*. Like, climate change -that's a political, economic, and social problem. Or, vast global inequality - that's a distribution problem and therefore political and economic and social once again. In most cases, the solutions to these kinds of global problems are known - there are just immense political and economic barriers to their adoption.
I guess the AI builders think that if they make the extra-smart robot it will come up with the magical technical solutions to big problems. I guess if you're envisioning that your magical future AI is gonna be sooooo super duper smart, you can imagine that it can do ~anything~!! Well I can imagine too, and I imagine that these guys are full of shit 🤣.
