Way back in the early 2000s, there was a system called "Dragon Dictate". The goal was to eliminate #human #transcriptionists with automated speech-to-text (sound familiar?) The system had to be trained on your voice and vocabulary. Once properly trained it could do a pretty good job, I'll guess 95-98%. It was better suited to output that was stereotyped (mostly the same), and structured (such as radiology reports and operative notes).
Regardless of how the note/report was generated, the professional who spoke the words had a obligation to at least scan the output and sign it (yes, with an ink pen!). Once signed it became part of the "legal medical record" open to misinterpretation, copying, lawsuits, etc. etc.
Once Dragon Dictate became routine (and they fired all the transcriptionists) I started to notice this little #disclaimer at the bottom:
"If portions of this note are confusing or indecipherable please feel free to call me with questions or concerns." Sounds a lot like #AI to me! I polite way to summarize this is:
👉 They were trying to force me to be their copy-editor. 👈
It cast the entire content in doubt.
Consider for a moment the difference between saying "The scan does not show cancer." and "The scan does show cancer." That "not" is doing a lot of work, and is very easy to miss when you're talking fast and never intend to read your own note ever again.
More subtle is the grammatical error in the first sentence. "This note was #dictated using Dragon text to speech recognition software." Either they changed their product name to "Dragon Text", in which case the capitalization is off. Or they transposed words and it should read "speech to text" or "speech recognition" with no text.
👉 In other words, they didn't even proof-read their own disclaimer! 😱

Musk's #satellites 'blocking' view of the #universe

"The new generation of Starlink satellites, which provide fast internet around the world, are interfering more with #RadioTelescopes than earlier versions, they say.
"The thousands of orbiting satellites are 'blinding' radio telescopes and may be hindering astronomical research, according to Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (#ASTRON).
"#SpaceX, which owns Starlink, has not replied to a request from BBC News for comment.
"The satellites provide broadband internet around the world, often to remote places, including challenging environments like Ukraine and Yemen.
"They are also used to connect remote areas of the UK to fast internet. In 2022 tests showed that Starlink could deliver internet speeds four times faster than the average, according to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
"But astronomers say this comes at a cost.
"'Every time more of these are launched with these kinds of emission levels, we see less and less of the sky,' Professor Jessica Dempsey, director of ASTRON, told BBC News."

An elderly patient of mine is being discharged from an area hospital today, after her 2nd admission in a few weeks. Good news: I can already see her discharge summary from the comfort of my home. Bad news: because of how sections are only added to, never deleted, it includes plans for hyperkalemia (recent) and hypokalemia (2021); follow-up of bowel injury (recent) and need for screening colonoscopy (from years ago -- even though its a Bad Idea right now).

@mlanger @DToher People have different tastes on whether they do or don't like accounts that boost frequently. Which is exactly why Mastodon lets you follow accounts *yet choose not see the posts they boost but only their original posts.*

All I’m saying is that the #boost function is imperative to #share #messages and drive #discussion. But the more I boost the more my #SignalToNoise ratio shifts, and the more I’m worried my followers just see boosted crap and not my own #musings and #WiseWisdoms. Right? And damn I’ve never used #hashtags so much in my life before.

@liaizon @msaunders yes understand this. But it does not get us outa the noise. #signaltonoise is the death of outreach and healthy projects. Hard to make focus with everyone shouting.
