For better meetings, Albert Einstein, Oscar Wilde, and Seth Godin agree that we need to focus on learning, not education!

Two Problems with Whining. The first is that it doesn't work. You can whine about the government or your friends or your job or your family, but nothing will happen except that you'll waste time. Worse... far worse... is that whining is a reverse placebo. When you get good at whining, you start noticing evidence that makes your whining more true. So you amplify that and immerse yourself in it, thus creating more evidence, more stuff worth complaining about. If you spent the same time prattling on about how optimistic you are, you'd have to work hard to make that true...

To make, as in: Creation
The most important work we do is to make decisions. Decisions don’t seem effortful (turn left or right, say yes or no) but the apparent risk and emotional labor is real. Hard decisions are hard because of the story we tell ourselves about repercussions and responsibility.
~ Seth Godin, from Decisions as effortslip:4usede1.
To make a decision is an act of creation.
I’m not sure when I fully integrated the idea that making decisions is a creative act. But it definitely is a creative act. Making a decision is not simply choosing among options. Making a decision is not simply saying ‘yes’ to something. (And I’m not referring to the obvious corollary that a ‘yes’ to something is a ‘no’ to other things.) Making a decision creates a connection between the before and the after. Those were two things, and through our decision we create a connection; We create something greater than the simple sum of those two “parts.” The connection itself is something wholly new.

Honka! Honka!
Godin’s writing frequently—it might be fair to say always—attempts to inspire. But from some quarters he is criticized for being too trite; that he speaks in platitudes.
No need to be part of the circus. If you can find a problem and solve it, you can skip the clown car.
~ Seth Godin from, Turtleneck confusionslip:4usetu2.
Two points: First, the problem with platitudes lies with the listener; if I’ve heard it so often, that it feels like a platitude, then why have I still not yet embodied the lesson? Second, Godin doesn’t get enough credit for his efforts to teach professionalism; and professionalism has nothing to do with getting paid (c.f. Steven Pressfield.)

Connecting and respecting
The idea of narrowing the number of people we’re intending to serve with our creative efforts is freeing. Kevin Kelly‘s 1000 True Fans is liberating in the sense that it frees us from having to imagine: How am I supposed to create something that excites and engages with millions of people. But even “just” those 1,000 fans is a daunting group to imagine.
It turns out that finding, connecting and respecting a small group of supporters and customers always outperforms the hustle for more. And that if you can create a remarkable story that’s worth spreading, it’ll spread. Not because you need it to, but because your customers do.
~ Seth Godin from, The reluctant spammerslip:4usete8.
Unfortunately, I’ve not yet found my people. Yes, certainly, people tell me they love what I create—but I’ve not yet found something that goes beyond being interesting to people. I’ve not yet found something that solves a problem for them… Excites them to action… Enables them to create something of their own…

Let’s talk about making IndieWeb weirder and easier
I’ve been a huge fan of IndieWeb since I stumbled upon it one fateful day. While the specifics of how I found it are lost in the annals of history, my willingness to use it in every project has never abated. Well, the bits I understand at any rate.
This is why I bring up the topic of making IndieWeb ideas into weird and easier-to-use […]

Civility
At the kickoff of an unusually long issue of 7 for Sunday, I’ll try to keep this first part short, because (as I often say, because I really do mean it) I appreciate your time and attention, and I don’t take it for granted.
Civility fades in the face of entitlement.
~ Seth Godin from, No thank you | Seth’s Blogslip:4useno2.
Godin’s point—that sometimes we choose to assert that something was ours to take, when in fact someone was kind enough to give a gift—really landed for me. I’m reminded of a recently-run-here quote from Kevin Kelly about the growth opportunities pointed to by irritation with others.

Seth Godin’s post for today hit home. I get trapped in time too often.

Living In Hyperbole
“… Greatest hits, by their nature, are unusual. And if the media you’re absorbing is selected from a billion possible clips, don’t be surprised if you start to believe that the unusual is normal.
It’s not.”

🍂🍂 The Leaf Blower Parable . . . 🍂🍂
"In one hour,
A gas-powered leaf blower will emit as much carbon dioxide
Equivalent as driving a typical internal combustion engine car 3,000 miles.
(That’s not a typo). "
"Using a leaf blower
Is bad for the hearing and respiration of the user,
Often a low-paid worker with no real options.
They’re annoyingly loud,
And can be heard from blocks away...."
