The #SAF also seems to have regained ground in Blue Nile state and has taken Jebel Moya. The latter had been the entry point for #RSF in #Sennar, and then Blue Nile states, from Al Jazirah. Not only has the siege of Sennar city thus been broken, but communications have been restored with SAF-held White Nile state, while the RSF in Sennar/Blue Nile are now isolated.

Earlier #SAF offensives in Khartoum (January), Al Jazirah (April) had failed to hamper further #RSF progress in #Kordofan, #Sennar and even Blue Nile. The resulting anxiety on the part of #Egypt and #Ethiopia, and transactional relations with #SouthSudan may have played a part in the early results of the newest SAF offensive.

The #RSF capture of #AlJazirah was a blow to morale, but the loss of #Sennar state is a disaster of yet another scale. Dinder is contested - although now under RSF control - and allied rebel groups might give the RSF a harder time on this new front from Al Fau to the Ethiopian border. The #SAF also made some progress in Omdurman, recapturing a neighbourhood in the West of the city recently.

While the #RSF capture of Sennar state and its capital Sinja is due to RSF maneuvering and SAF sending reinforcements to Sennar town, the same cannot be said of several recent RSF successes.

#AlJazirah and #Sennar are or were the economic and agricultural centre of the country. Their loss together with the ruin of #Khartoum means that the Sudanese people should brace for ever more difficult times.

Widespread looting has already begun throughout #Sennar, and the usual prevalence of #WarCrimes on both sides are likely to depopulate Sinja like it did other frontline cities. Lawlessness is likely to prevail there like in other #RSF-held territory.

They now have attempted a surprising and successful maneuver that gave them control over most of #Sennar state. Despite multiple civil wars, that part of the country had remained peaceful since the uprising of the Mahdi 130 years ago.

What the #RSF control over #Sennar means for #Sudan

6 months ago, the RSF took over the state of #AlJazirah and its capital Wad Madani. A RSF raid already tried to reach Sennar town (which has the same name as the state but is not its capital) but had to retreat under #SAF bombardment.

When the #RSF took control of Al Jazirah state and its capital Wad Madani, the question was whether they could maintain their presence in the area, despite widespread looting, inefficient administration, hatred from the local population, and a #SAF counteroffensive from the West, South and East.

Now, not only has the counteroffensive largely failed — only a few villages changed hands — but the RSF could afford the luxury of invading #Sennar state to the south.

Sinja falls

The #RSF have taken #Sennar state’s capital yesterday, 115 km behind the frontline.

They first had taken control of Jebel Moya on 24 June, on the Kosti-Sennar road and 40 km behind the frontline, after which they threatened Sennar city.

Reinforcements from Sinja to Sennar mean the former was underdefended.

At the onset of the current war in #Sudan (April 2023) another attempt was made by #Amhara militias to push back the #SAF. In vain — although it again took several months for the SAF to regain control of the territory.

The Sudan Tribune reports Amhara militias have again invaded and penetrated some 15km inside the Al #Fashaga triangle, as of yesterday. This coincides with #RSF raids within #Sennar state, some distance behind SAF lines.

One of the several disputed border areas of Sudan, the 250 sq. km Al Fashaga triangle has been formally ceded by Ethiopia to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in 1902. Since then, #Amhara and Tigrayan farmers have cultivated alongside the Sudanese the fertile land situated between the Atbara and Tekeze rivers and the international border line, a compromise formalized in 2008.

Burhan (#SAF) launches offensive to retake #AlJazirah (#Sudan)

The region had been conquered by the #RSF last December, after which they momentarily reached Sennar city and launched raids to the east in #Gedaref state. Sudan's agricultural and economic heartland has been an uneasy prey to digest however. While #WhiteNile and #Sennar states were poorly defended and should have been easy targets, Hemedti's forces were grounded by widespread looting first, and SAF airstrikes second.

Clashes are sporadic in Al Fasher (North #Darfur). The states of #WhiteNile and #Sennar are poorly defended and in imminent danger, despite Malik Agar's (Nr 2 of the #TSC) efforts to keep the #RSF away from the #BlueNile state.

This new victory opens the way to state capital Al Fulah (West #Kordofan), as well as a number of oil fields, including contested Heglig, Fulla and Deffra, in #Abyei.

It also puts the RSF on a collision course with #SouthSudan and #SPLMN.
