    Perhaps inspired by this, Jizen may have used the radish to symbolise the star, linking it to the overcoming of obstacles. The vegetable would come to be seen as a charm.

  2. On December 7th and 8th about 5000 radishes are cooked and 10,000 meals consumed.

    There are many theories about the symbolism of the radish...one suggests the cross-section resembles a mirror, a symbol of enlightenment (December 8th is the date Buddha reached Nirvana).

    Kyōto has two unusual celebrations that fall around December 8th.

    As winter begins there comes an opportunity to eat 'blessed' radishes at Senbon Shaka-dō (千本釈迦堂), and a chance to say goodbye to old needles at Hōrin-ji (法輪寺).
