  1. The leaders I've watched plateau aren't the ones who lacked talent. They're the ones who kept waiting for someone else to guide their growth. The ones who keep moving treat their development like a line item they control. You don't need your organization's permission to read, reflect, or ask hard questions. That part is yours.

  2. Nobody is coming to own your professional development. Not your manager. Not HR. Not the next reorg. Not the leadership program that keeps getting cut when budgets get tight.

  3. When people feel seen, they open up. The negotiation that was stalled starts moving. The team member who was withdrawn starts engaging. The conversation that stuck starts moving. Empathy isn't about agreement. It's about acknowledgment. It costs nothing, and it changes everything.

Empathy is one of the nine self-leadership topics we explore in our self-pace online course, First Lead Yourself.

  4. Most people think empathy is about being nice. It's not. It's about understanding how other people see and feel things — well enough that you can actually work with them, not just around them. And here's what surprises people: empathy is a skill. Which means it can be developed. The leaders who develop and practice empathy are consistently more effective than the ones who don't.

  5. The hardest decisions I've made weren't hard because I didn't know the options. They were hard because two things I cared about were pulling in opposite directions. Growth vs. stability.. Speed vs. quality. Not getting fired vs doing the right thing.

  6. Do you protect time for deep thinking? What does that look like in practice — or what keeps getting in the way?

  7. When I was a corporate employee, my calendar was always packed. Yours probably is too.  Meeting after meeting. Follow-ups, a never ending task list. By the end of the day, I felt like I’d been going 100 miles an hour, and gotten further behind. The organization I worked for rewarded people who were always slammed…”busy people get more done,” was the mantra.  But busy and productive are not the same thing.

  8. When did your first instinct turn out to be wrong? And how did you catch it before it did damage?

  9. The leaders I've respected most have a gap between stimulus and response. They pause. They ask a question. They get curious before they get decisive.

"What happened here?" lands differently than "Who dropped the ball?" "Help me understand your thinking" opens more than "That won't work." Curiosity isn't idle. It's a discipline.

  10. When something goes wrong, our brains are quick to assign blame. It’s a survival mechanism. Humans process negative events as threats. The gut response to defend and protect ego.

Unless there really is a tiger (real or metaphorical), the temptation to react immediately is almost always suboptimal.

  11. RecruitTheBest Daily Digest- Why Do Great Leaders Lead With Love?

Leading people is a lot like creating work family. There are joy and tears, fun and fears.’

Love matters. It matters because with all that we have learned with respect to phenomenal leadership approaches, models, and philosophies, we still fail.’

When we fail to recognize the human need and capacity to love, we fail as leaders.’

Love is the crucial component in our lives, and our very survival depends upon its presence.’

Leaders who love create environments of compassion and caring.’

When people in the workplace are bonded by love, they forged solid bonds with one another that keep them together.’

Love enhances the feeling of ‘us’ along with a sense of purpose.’

When love is present, when care for one another rules, and when there’s an abundance of empathy, organizations take on the very human qualities toward which we should all strive.’

Love knows no titles. And hanging our importance or stature on the title in front of our name serve no purpose other than to inflate our ego.’

    ‘We depend on one another.’

    We need one another.’

  12. 9. When I try to put my phone down, it feels like an inner double-pull:

A vacuum‑cleaner vortex dragging me into the screen – and the moment I ask “Why am I doing this?”, a tiny angry Rumpelstilzchen in me yells: “Absolutely not! We’re not looking at that! That’s what the phone is for!”

I just watch. So much in me says: anything but the feeling — straight into the phone.

  14. 8. Next step: Bought an old-school alarm clock. My phone can charge in the living room at night. What happens instead? 😂

My inner Monty Python sketch: “Leave the phone in the living room? Sure, I’ll do it. … Soon. Or tomorrow. … Or… well? …never?”
Making deals with myself is like political negotiations—lots of talk, little action.
At least humor helps, even when the phone is still right next to me.

  16. 6. Self-care as a friendly invitation to consider myself important? My inner slacker is already rolling its eyes.

But maybe that’s the trick for less smartphone time: not being stricter, but kinder to myself. Charging my batteries instead of running on autopilot.

Time to get off the “ego trip” that others are always more important than me.

  18. 5. The Kantian question: What is a human?

Today, I was more dog than human. Instead of chasing dopamine clicks on my phone, I had sun on my face and grass under my feet. My dog just rolls in the moment—while I? I’m learning from her that real life doesn’t happen on a screen.

To the question “What is a human?” I definitely don’t want to answer: a digitally living junkie.

  21. Sometimes I wonder when I turned from the kid staring at slot machine junkies in smoky bars into my own smartphone zombie.

My minimalism device is now my endless jackpot—and I’m the player who can’t stop.

My analog fingers lead me into digital addiction. We think we live digitally, but dopamine is still released the analog way.

The real challenge isn’t knowing the formula — it’s living it.

  28. Am I truly present –
    or just defending something old?

    This urge to be right
    is often not truth,
    but self-protection.

Much of what we call reaction
    is really memory.

    When I notice that,
    a quiet space opens.
    No need to fight.
    Only the freedom to choose.
