This week on the blog: wrapping up my tour of the Sega Master System by pushing its scrolling system a bit with parallax and its weird "scroll inhibitor" system that prefigures later systems' window layers a bit.

Last week I realized that even my 16-bit retro projects were simple enough that I could replicate them on the 8-bit Sega Master System with power to spare.
This week on the blog: OK, so how far do I have to push its graphics system until it *does* start sweating under the strain?
Part 1 of 2, where it isn't actually sweating yet.

This week on the blog: Continuing my tour of the Sega Master System, this time putting everything together into a couple of test programs to put the system through its paces.

New on the blog: I've looked at Sega's 16-bit system, the Genesis/Mega Drive, and I've looked at their first system, the SG-1000, but I haven't yet really looked at the Master System. It's time to fix that. I was VERY pleasantly surprised by the amount of power it offered me.

New on the blog this week: last week I was playing in BASIC, but this week I take as direct command of the TMS9918 VDP as possible (via the BIOSless SG-1000) to put the graphics chip through all of its paces at the level of registers and VRAM.
There's a lot about the official datasheet I don't like, and I wrote this to be my new one-stop shop for the chip.

It's a bit cramped at 6x8 pixels, but the Sega Master System/Mk III has 16 colors per tile and 6-bit RGB (the equivalent of EGA), and that means you can cram the entire Progress flag into one tile without any trickery whatsoever.
This thing was significantly closer to the Genesis than I expected it to be after poking at the SG-1000.
