  1. RIP "naked ape" and #scienceWriter #DesmondMorris. I seem to remember that half a century ago his radical idea of describing #humans as nothing but mammals impressed and influenced me quite a bit.

  10. oh. #RIP #TimRadford, #ScienceWriter extraordinaire. He actually gave me a brief introduction to the job many years ago. I remember I couldn't get a word in edgewise. and he commissioned/edited a few stories I wrote for the grauniad. Back in the days of the ever-changing pullout sections dedicated to science / #technology.

  18. 👶 Got a kid in childcare? This blog post about early respiratory illnesses is for you. As a microbiologist mom, I became interested in this topic after my son started daycare and brought home illness after illness.

📚 I was fueled by 20% curiosity and 80% exasperation to search the scientific literature to see what studies had been done in this area... because I really wanted to know when the deluge of illnesses will subside. 😩

    Hope this is helpful!

  21. Here is the cover for *From Typewriters to Twitter:Celebrating 50 Years of Science Writing* -- my pet project during the pandemic. (Pretty excited about this)

This might be the only book that chronicles science writing/ #scicomm in #Canada A digital version is available for free to members of the SWCC (after you log onto the website a link should appear under About). Non-members should contact the association directly and ask (not sure if there's a small fee or if it's free too?). 92 pages, lots of historical photos, short bios of some extraordinary and often eccentric and high-profile writers who helped shaped Canada's science writing landscape. Controversies! Romance! Serious stuff! Fun stuff! The impactful awards program! This book had input from over 20 people who played various roles in the association. This isn't an in-depth analysis, but chronicles important events and an evolving media association. There are no plans at this point for a print copy, but if interested send a note to the SWCC office expressing interest.

    Members, log in at: sciencewriters.ca/

Non-members, contact (it may take a couple of days for a response): [email protected]

  27. Dear friends,
@BBCWorld hosted an illuminating discussion around Rachel Carson, the influential #sciencewriter most famous for Silent Spring. Very much worth the listen. A quote from her that ended the show was worth the wait.

  31. Writing a review? Have you used literature mapping tools?

If you want to know about the different literature mapping methods, here is an overview: enago.com/academy/literature-m [Warning this article contains information about tools that are no longer supported]

A more up-to-date blog is here: aarontay.medium.com/3-new-tool [Complete with links to the tools]

@AaronTay has an expanded list of tools here: musingsaboutlibrarianship.blog

Sadly Cocites and Citation Gecko are no longer being supported.

I've tried ResearchRabbit, linking with my Zotero database. I'd be interested to hear about your experiences with these tools.

  32. Heyyy, new people! Welcome to #Mastodon - the one place in social media space you're not terrified to enter every time!

I've already done an #introduction when I first arrived way back at the beginning of the month, but I'll do another quick one here for the newbies in case they want to connect, too.

Hello, I'm Rachel, I'm a #Freelance #ScienceWriter and I love writing about the intersections of #science and #culture - whether that's using #technology to ask for help from the masses to capture images of and identify #space / #weather events in #CitizenScience projects or talking about the #history of #SeaMonsters and why so many of us believe in #aliens now. I also thoroughly love #folklore #poetry and #essay

I'm helping out with a @nasa project called Spritacular (spritacular.org) right now and will be graduating from #JohnsHopkins with an MA in Science Writing in December.

Oh, and I love anything and everything to do with #animals. 😊

  34. One thing I stupidly forgot to mention in my #introduction is that I'm a #technophile. (I knew the command prompts for changing the font and background colors in DOS by the time I was in kindergarten.) But I *did* mention I'm a #writer, and writers also typically enjoy #reading. And while I'm now a #ScienceWriter, I grew up reading #fiction (especially #fantasy) almost exclusively.

If you know me at all, you know I'm a little obsessed with #monsters, so whenever I start exploring a new #AI art bot, the first thing I do is test its imagination by asking it to make me a #Jabberwocky, For the unfamiliar, a Jabberwocky (or, technically, a Jabberwock) is a horrifying creature of limited but wild description from a nonsense poem of the same name by Lewis Carroll.

So far, my experiments with AI art bots rendering Jabberwocks have been disappointing, but this time, things seem to be different. After a very brief introduction between me and this AI art bot and a very simple text request, I think #MidJourney may have actually visited #Wonderland.

  35. Hello, @Mastodon 👋 A quick #intro

I'm a #sciencewriter and an editor at MIT Technology Review, where I commission articles from writers, journalists, and experts. I covered #chips for a few years and have a special interest in #computing, #physics, #materials, #space, #histSTM, and the intersection of technology and society.

Among other things, you'll see me post about our print magazine every couple of months. The latest issue just came out technologyreview.com/magazines
