My Best Budget Travel Tip: Stay Close, Travel Well

One of the best travel tips I can give, especially if you want to make the most of your money, is surprisingly simple:

Stay as close as possible to the places you actually want to visit.

It may sound counterintuitive. After all, when we talk about budget travel, we usually think about finding the cheapest hotel, the cheapest transportation, and the cheapest meals.

But after travelling quite a lot, I’ve realized that cheap doesn’t always mean economical.

Sometimes, a hotel that is a little more expensive but is within walking distance of the places I want to explore can actually save me money. I spend less on transportation, less time stuck in traffic, and more time enjoying the destination.

And for me, there is another reason I prefer staying close.

I love being close to the communities.

I don’t always want to stay in the most luxurious tourist area or inside a resort where everything feels separated from the place I came to see. I enjoy walking through neighbourhoods, discovering little restaurants, watching the locals go about their day, finding small cafés, visiting local markets, and simply observing everyday life.

That, for me, is part of travelling.

I don’t really travel on a strict budget

Here’s the funny part.

I often talk about travelling wisely, but I wouldn’t necessarily describe myself as a budget traveller.

I am willing to spend more on certain things if they make my trip more comfortable or enjoyable.

My philosophy is simple:

I save before I travel so I don’t have to worry while I’m travelling.

If I know I have a trip coming up, I prepare for it. I save money, plan where I want to go, book what needs to be booked, and make sure I have enough room in my budget to actually enjoy myself.

Because what is the point of travelling somewhere beautiful if I spend the entire trip thinking, “Should I really buy this?” or “Can I afford to eat here?”

I want to enjoy the moment.

I want to sit down for that coffee.

I want to try the local food.

I want to take the train instead of rushing.

I want to wander around without constantly checking my wallet.

Save first. Enjoy later.

For me, travelling wisely is not about depriving myself.

It’s about knowing where my money is worth spending.

I may choose a reasonably priced hotel, but I’ll choose one in a great location.

I may skip an expensive tourist attraction if it doesn’t interest me, but happily spend money on a local experience that I’ll remember for years.

I may walk instead of taking a taxi when the distance is reasonable, not because I have to, but because walking lets me see more of the place.

And when I travel, I try to spend on experiences rather than things I can easily buy back home.

So yes, I save before the trip.

I enjoy the trip.

And when I get home…

I’ll worry about the bills later.

Because for me, travel is not about proving how little I can spend.

It’s about making sure that the money I do spend gives me something valuable in return: time, experiences, memories, and the freedom to enjoy where I am.

That’s my version of budget travel.

Travel close. Spend wisely. Experience more. And most importantly, enjoy the moment. 🌏✈️❤️
