UKRI’s total research budget is close to £10 billion a year

The funding it is withdrawing from Jodrell Bank is £2.8 million

The Lovell Telescope has stood at the Cheshire site since 1957

I did my MSc at Jodrell Bank, and I still remember those summer mornings, with the sunlight on the horizon, as I walked past the Lovell Telescope. It’s one of those visual spectacles that has stayed etched in my memory. And let’s not even mention its contribution to astronomy.

This is unbelievably foolish and short-sighted by the science council. This UNESCO listed site is a pioneer in radio astronomy, a field that, thanks to it, UK based scientists have been leaders in the field, world class scientific work for seventy years. The amount saved versus harm caused is ridiculous.

As one scientist notes, this is a "colosaal act of self harm"

If this leaked info is to be trusted, we'll soon be adding #SaveJodrellBank to #SaveUKAstronomy🔭. I fear this is UKRI "rolling the pitch" to prepare us for the official announcement of unpleasant news😔

There is still a little glimmer hope though: A DSIT spokesperson said: "This is speculation".
