De berg Gerizim[Dit is het vijfde van zes blogjes over Pontius Pilatus. Het eerste was hier.]
De samaritaanse geloofsgemeenschap vond haar oorsprong in een conflict dat speelde in het Jeruzalem van de vierde eeuw v.Chr. Eén groep priesters heeft toen de stad verlaten en is opnieuw begonnen in de stad Samaria, bij het huidige Nablus, waar al eerder een belangrijke tempel had gestaan. De samaritanen geloofden dat er ooit een profeet “zoals Mozes” zou zijn, een messiaans figuur die zijn volgelingen zou leiden naar een beter bestaan.
De samaritaanse profeet
In 36 na Chr. beweerde iemand dat hij die “profeet als Mozes” was. Hij beloofde dat hij enkele heilige voorwerpen, begraven op de berg Gerizim, zou tonen, die zouden bewijzen dat hij inderdaad was wie hij zei te zijn. Zijn aanhangers kwamen bewapend naar de berg en Pontius Pilatus greep onmiddellijk in met zo’n duizend soldaten. Hij verspreidde de menigte en beperkte zich ertoe de leiders te executeren. Niettemin beschouwden de samaritanen zijn geweld als buitensporig. Daarom deden ze een beroep op de Syrische gouverneur, Lucius Vitellius, de vader van de latere keizer. Onze enige bron, de Joodse geschiedschrijver Flavius Josephus, vertelt wat er daarna gebeurde:
Vitellius beval Pilatus om naar Rome terug te keren om de keizer verslag te doen over de zaken waarvan hij door de samaritanen was beschuldigd. En dus, gehoorzaam aan het bevel van Vitellius dat hij niet kon weigeren, haastte Pilatus zich naar Rome, nadat hij tien jaar in Judea was geweest. Maar voordat hij Rome bereikte, was Tiberius al overleden.noot Flavius Josephus, Joodse Oudheden 18.89.
Pensioen
Als de menigte werkelijk bewapend naar de berg was gekomen, is moeilijk te begrijpen wat Pilatus verkeerd heeft gedaan. In tegendeel. Met een minimum aan bloedvergieten had hij een hoop problemen weten te voorkómen.
Het kan heel goed zijn dat de feiten anders zijn: de man mocht na tien jaar met pensioen, en in steden als Samaria werd zijn vertrek uitgelegd alsof hij werd bestraft. Net zoals in de eerder door Josephus beschreven incidenten lijkt Pilatus het slachtoffer te zijn van de agenda van de auteur, die zelden een goed woord over heeft voor de Romeinse gouverneurs, omdat hij zo wil tonen dat de heerschappij behoorde bij een eigen, Joodse koning – in casu Herodes Agrippa II.
Op de achtergrond speelt een tweede probleem, dat ik in mijn eerste blogje al aanstipte. Als Pontius Pilatus gouverneur was, had hij een zelfstandig mandaat, en kon de gouverneur van Syrië hem simpelweg niet wegsturen. Als Pilatus wel kon worden weggestuurd, was hij geen gouverneur en komt de vraag op waarom hij rechtszaken leidde. We weten dat hij zichzelf aanduidde als prefect – zie het volgende blogje – en kunnen deze militaire titel niet matchen met zijn eerdere optreden in Jeruzalem.
Kortom: we begrijpen het allemaal weer eens niet. Het is en blijft oudheidkunde, de wetenschap van de dataschaarste, de wetenschap van het tastend zoeken en de wetenschap van het nadenken over de eigen onwetendheid. Wie dingen over de Oudheid weet, heeft het vak gewoon niet begrepen.

Am Freitag, den 19. Juli, entschied der Internationale #Gerichtshof (IGH), dass die israelische #Besetzung des #Gazastreifens und des #Westjordanlands, einschließlich #Ostjerusalems, rechtswidrig ist und "so schnell wie möglich" beendet werden muss. Das #Gericht erklärte, dass #Israel verpflichtet ist, unverzüglich alle neuen #Siedlungsaktivitäten zu unterlassen, alle Siedler aus den besetzten Gebieten zu evakuieren und den Palästinensern Wiedergutmachung für die durch das 57-jährige israelische Militärregime verursachten Schäden zu leisten. Es bestätigte auch, dass einige der israelischen Maßnahmen in den besetzten Gebieten dem Verbrechen der #Apartheid gleichkommen.
Die Entscheidung - ein so genanntes #Beratungsgutachten - geht auf einen Antrag der UN-#Generalversammlung aus dem Jahr 2022 zurück und ist nicht bindend. Es ist jedoch das erste Mal, dass sich das oberste Gericht der Welt zur Rechtmäßigkeit der israelischen Kontrolle über die besetzten Gebiete äußert, und stellt eine scharfe Ablehnung der seit langem von Israel geltend gemachten rechtlichen Argumente dar.
Der Präsident der Palästinensischen #Autonomiebehörde, Mahmoud #Abbas, begrüßte das Urteil, bezeichnete es als "Triumph der Gerechtigkeit" und forderte die UN-#Generalversammlung und d#en Sicherheitsrat auf, weitere Maßnahmen zur Beendigung der Besatzung zu prüfen. Der israelische #Premierminister Benjamin #Netanjahu wies das Urteil als "absurd" zurück und sagte: "Das jüdische Volk ist kein Besatzer in seinem eigenen Land, weder in unserer ewigen Hauptstadt #Jerusalem noch in #Judäa und #Samaria [dem #Westjordanland], unserer historischen Heimat". Die Vereinigten Staaten bekräftigten lediglich, dass Israels Siedlungen illegal sind, und kritisierten "die Breite der Stellungnahme des Gerichts", die "die Bemühungen um eine Lösung des Konflikts erschweren wird", so die USA.
Um mehr über die Bedeutung und Tragweite des Urteils zu erfahren, sprach +972 Magazine @972mag mit Diana Buttu, einer palästinensischen Anwältin mit Sitz in #Haifa, die von 2000 bis 2005 als Rechtsberaterin der #PLO tätig war. In dieser Zeit gehörte sie zu dem Team, das vor dem #IGH einen Fall bezüglich der israelischen Trennmauer vorbrachte, deren Verlauf das Gericht in einem weiteren nicht bindenden Gutachten für rechtswidrig erklärte. Adnan, una laurea in economia, sposato, padre di 9 figli, è stato arrestato 12 volte finora e ha trascorso un totale di circa 8 anni di detenzione, per la maggior parte in detenzione amministrativa.
Questa è la quinta volta che Adnan da vita ad uno sciopero della fame.

As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind and set out on his way to Jerusalem. He sent messengers ahead of him, who went into a village in Samaria to get everything ready for him. But the people there would not receive him, because it was clear that he was on his way to Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”
Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then Jesus and his disciples went on to another village.
