What If We’ve Got It Wrong? An Open Letter to a School Leader on Uniform, Heat and Behaviour
A school in England, facing a run of very hot days and a national heat alert, wrote to parents to set out its expectations. There were some adjustments - small ones - but the overall message was clear: standards would hold, routines would remain, and any loosening of uniform would need to be carefully controlled. There was also an implication, lightly but unmistakably put, that where uniform had been relaxed in the past, behaviour had slipped. For one parent reading it, that last point stuck. Quite frankly one fewer #BoardingSchool in #England is a *good* thing (I'm a survivor of these places) - even if they are no longer as much the #safeguarding and #abuse nightmare they were in 1980s, they still embed the fucked up class system that causes many of the long term problems in our country..

One of the core benefits of having a membership with the #AoCPP and #ISPCAN is that they both include access to extremely valuable, current #research on #Safeguarding and #ChildProtection. I'm currently evaluating how to best equip #teachers and other #school staff with skills and knowledge to improve child safety. Finding current research on exactly that topic is invaluable!

I spent a wasted hour reading about an organisation I'm a passive member of and its Safeguarding Policy, or lack of!
It's all a bit scary if you start thinking about this sort of thing.
It seems that they're starting to turn the ship around after a couple of 'near miss' events - and about time too.

At least she didn't take the coke and snort it herself - but this is dodgy practice for which a former #Essex #police #officer was rightly disciplined and barred.
#Drugs should have been taken down the station and a record made of the incident (even if suspect wasn't arrested) so its available for #safeguarding / #MentalHealth monitoring (someone who takes drugs and calls 999 on himself clearly isn't in his right mind!)
I do wonder if suspect was white and middle class, so officers didn't want to make a big thing of it as it didn't fit their stereotypes (and didn't want to deal with the paperwork of doing things properly?)

💯 agree with @[email protected] here. For me, term #sustainability is completely inadequate for what we need to be. We need #resilience. This is why I harp on about the need for schools to be climate resilient by treating #climatechange as a #safeguarding issue.

CW: Mental Health & Mention of Suicide
The final Safeguarding Report into the catastrophic suicide attempt by our daughter about 2 years has been published.
Although I was fully involved during the preparation of this report it is horrifying seeing the full catalogue of errors and missed opportunities laid bare in black & white.
Although there's the usual sections about 'whats changed' & 'recommendations', I have very little faith that the agencies involved - Mental health services, police, GP surgery, acute hospitals - will make sufficient progress to prevent something similar happening to someone else.
A lot of this is organisational inertia, lack of communication & poor professional behaviour, but it's underpinned by each and every one of the organisations involved being chronically underfunded.
(Edit ; our daughter has made an excellent recovery and although not fully 'well', is now living in supported accommodation. She is in constant pain.)
