El 16 de marzo de 1988, sobre Halabja no cayó lluvia.
Cayó gas.

En esa ciudad kurda del norte de Irak, aviones del régimen de Saddam Hussein lanzaron agentes químicos contra una población civil atrapada en plena guerra entre Irak e Irán.
En pocas horas, las calles quedaron cubiertas de cuerpos.
Murieron alrededor de 5.000 personas y miles más quedaron heridas, muchas con secuelas que durarían toda la vida.

Lo más devastador de Halabja no fue solo la cifra.
Fue la intimidad del horror.

Familias enteras cayeron donde estaban.
En puertas, patios y callejones.
Madres abrazaron a sus hijos sin poder protegerlos de un enemigo que no se veía.
Muchos murieron en segundos, otros en minutos interminables.
Los supervivientes recordaron un olor extraño, dulce, parecido al de una manzana, justo antes de que el aire se volviera mortal.
Ese olor suele asociarse al gas mostaza y a agentes nerviosos como el sarín o el tabún, que estaban entre las armas químicas usadas aquel día.

Los testimonios de los que lograron sobrevivir son difíciles de olvidar.
Algunos contaron que primero llegaron los bombardeos convencionales, y después la nube.
Otros recuerdan cómo la gente empezó a caer en silencio, sin entender qué estaba pasando.
Muchos intentaron huir hacia las colinas cercanas, pero el gas se extendía con el viento.

Por eso Halabja sigue doliendo tanto.

Porque no fue una tragedia accidental ni una consecuencia ciega del combate.
Fue un ataque químico deliberado contra civiles kurdos, cometido en el contexto de la campaña de Anfal, una operación militar del régimen iraquí destinada a aplastar cualquier resistencia kurda en el norte del país.
Entre 1987 y 1988 esa campaña arrasó pueblos enteros, desplazó a cientos de miles de personas y dejó decenas de miles de muertos.

Para muchísimos kurdos, Halabja no es solo una masacre.
Es una herida abierta en la memoria de su pueblo.

Las imágenes que salieron de la ciudad dieron la vuelta al mundo: calles llenas de cuerpos, familias enteras muertas donde habían intentado refugiarse, niños todavía en brazos de sus padres.
Una de las fotografías más conocidas muestra a un padre caído en la calle con su bebé aún abrazado contra el pecho.

Y también fue una prueba de algo vergonzoso.

El mundo vio las imágenes.
Vio a los muertos.
Vio a los niños.
Y, aun así, la respuesta internacional no estuvo a la altura del crimen.
Durante años el contexto de la Guerra Fría, la guerra entre Irak e Irán y los intereses geopolíticos hicieron que muchos gobiernos miraran hacia otro lado o reaccionaran con una tibieza difícil de justificar.

Halabja quedó como símbolo no solo de la barbarie, sino también del fracaso moral de quienes sabían lo que había pasado y no actuaron con la contundencia que exigía una atrocidad así.

Con el tiempo, la ciudad fue reconstruida.
Hoy Halabja tiene memoriales, cementerios y museos que recuerdan lo ocurrido.
Cada año, el 16 de marzo, miles de kurdos se reúnen para conmemorar a las víctimas.
No es solo un acto de duelo: es también una forma de decir que lo sucedido no será olvidado.

Recordar Halabja no es solo mirar al pasado.

Es negarse a aceptar que una ciudad pueda ser asfixiada y luego empujada al silencio.

Halabja sigue viva en la memoria, en el duelo y en la verdad.
Y mientras su nombre siga pronunciándose, aquella nube de muerte no habrá conseguido borrarlo todo.
