Learning to use an RTL-SDR v4 has been on my bucket list for ages. Last week I finally started, tuned into FT8, and… ohhh myyy. 🤯

I'm amazed how it pulls in signals from soooo far away on nothing but the cheap stock antenna.

I was never a Pokémon kid, but now I have a strong urge to "catch 'em all" and fill in at least one Maidenhead grid.
Is that a thing?

I think it's so cool that from my house in Nottingham, with a cheap SDR dongle and the included antenna I can pick up ADSB signals from aircraft over a hundred miles away and then plot their details on a map with an opensource tool and a bit of HTML. #SoftwareDefinedRadio #SDR #RTLSDR #Radio #aviation

Setting up my RTL-SDR dongle to work on my Android tablet with RF Analyzer, and of course the first thing I do is tune in the local classic rock station and listen to "Stairway to Heaven". That was the only path I could go by.

Existing apt installable programs don't support it, so I figured it was high time to do what any normal person would do -- convincingly implement librtlsdr.so off my rust sdr codebase (sparky) and make it work without any other changes. Obviously.

Since I was already running Mosquitto as #MQTT broker, I flashed #OpenMqttGateway on an #ESP32 module with a 433MHz receiver and got myself a non-smart weather station.
Alternately you could use #RTL433 and an #RTLSDR dongle to receive the data (or data from your neighbors weather stations).

My station is from LaCrosse, but there are other supported brands.

Yay, my ACARS receiver is working again after replacing the powered USB hub.

ps. dirty or clouded windows on the outside of a plane, although not a safety hazard or anything, are a great annoyance to me. You're at 35,000 feet and there's a SMUDGE on that window and you want to take a picture of something....

Apparently toasted a powered USB hub running my SDRs... (36W hub...). Going for a slightly more reputable 60W hub manufacturer to see if it lasts longer. #sdr #rtlsdr

A very interesting use for those #rtlsdr #sdr dongles: Listen to what your heat cost allocators, water meters etc. are talking all day. And graph it.
Hint: They're really chatty.
And the stuff is surprisingly easy to setup with cheap dongles, i.e. former DVB-T/DAB dongles.

And what is even more impressive: Those little things can do proper #AES...who would've thunk.

Das sieht doch schonmal ganz gut aus. Besonders cool ist, dass auf der Karte nach einer Weile die Abdeckung angezeigt wird. Da unser Arbeitszimmer nach Norden ausgerichtet ist, ergibt das auch halbwegs Sinn. Feeder für ADSB-Exchange fehlt noch.
