En 1932, once hombres aparecen sentados sobre una viga de acero, comiendo tranquilamente a más de 200 metros sobre Manhattan.
Piernas colgando, sin arnés, sin red.
La imagen dio la vuelta al mundo como símbolo de coraje en plena Gran Depresión.
Pero la realidad es un poco menos romántica… y bastante más interesante.La fotografía, conocida como Lunch atop a Skyscraper, no fue un momento espontáneo.
Fue una sesión organizada por los promotores del Rockefeller Center para promocionar su nuevo rascacielos, el entonces edificio RCA (hoy Comcast).
Nueva York necesitaba optimismo, y esa imagen vendía exactamente eso: progreso, valentía, futuro.Los hombres eran reales, claro.
Obreros de carne y hueso que cobraban alrededor de 1,50 dólares la hora.
Muchos eran inmigrantes —irlandeses, italianos, eslovacos— y también trabajadores Mohawk de Kahnawake.
No estaban ahí por épica personal: estaban trabajando, y negarse no era precisamente una opción.Hay otro detalle que cambia bastante la percepción: no estaban exactamente a 260 metros de caída libre.
Unos metros más abajo ya había una planta terminada.
Aun así, el riesgo era real.
Y lo sabían.Durante décadas, ni siquiera se supo quién había tomado la foto.
Se llegó a atribuir a Lewis Hine, pero hoy muchos historiadores apuntan a Charles C. Ebbets, que estaba allí ese día junto a otros fotógrafos.Y lo más inquietante: de los once hombres, solo dos han sido identificados con cierta seguridad.

Otros nombres han sido propuestos por familias, pero sin pruebas definitivas.
El edificio lleva el apellido Rockefeller grabado en piedra.
Ellos dejaron una imagen… sin nombre.Mientras tanto, la construcción del complejo no fue precisamente segura.
Se calcula que entre 5 y 10 trabajadores murieron durante los años que duró la obra.
Era la norma de la época: sin regulaciones modernas, el riesgo formaba parte del oficio.
Para comparar, en el Empire State Building murieron oficialmente 5 personas, aunque algunas versiones elevan la cifra.Dentro de esa historia hay un grupo que destaca: los Mohawk de Kahnawake, conocidos como “skywalkers”.
Durante años se dijo que no tenían miedo a las alturas.
Ellos siempre lo negaron.
No era ausencia de miedo, era control.
Disciplina.
Confianza total en el equipo.Su historia empieza en 1886, cuando una empresa los vio moverse con naturalidad sobre estructuras de acero durante la construcción de un puente en sus tierras.
A partir de ahí, se convirtieron en una pieza clave en los grandes proyectos de Nueva York.
Crearon incluso su propio barrio en Brooklyn, “Little Caughnawaga”.Participaron en la construcción de rascacielos emblemáticos y, décadas después, sus descendientes cerraron un círculo duro de asimilar: trabajaron en la limpieza tras el 11-S y en la construcción del nuevo One World Trade Center.
Al final, la famosa foto funciona casi como una metáfora perfecta: un icono construido para vender una idea… que terminó ocultando a quienes realmente lo hicieron posible.
