MC POV: you realise you are a book character. What do you do?

No, no. I think you’ve misunderstood. I’m the narrator, nor a character. I’m telling the story of when I got sent to a remote channel island to investigate their music scene. It’s a real island - look it up! There’s photos and everything. And you’re telling me that all the bands I meet don’t exist? You can listen to their music on Bandcamp.

What do you mean they’re not real? They’re the figment of one man’s imagination? I’m a figment of that same imagination too? What? Really? No way. I think I need a cup of tea. Not one of Keisha’s, obviously.

What do you mean she doesn’t exist either?

I’m going for a lie down.

What could you change about your world to make it better for most people?

Thinking about the island in ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’, actually … nothing. There are irritations for the visitor, for sure. However it is such a tiny place that any changes might risk the charm of the place. By way of example: cheaper flights to get there would mean more people get to see the beauty, but that in itself will dilute the quiet, secluded nature of the island. In real life, I think the only change I would want to see would be still greater influence of the local wildlife trust, who do an amazing job.

Who was the first character you created for this work?

    This is unconventional…

All the characters for ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ were created a couple of years before the book was written, as they all came to shape on a fictional compilation CD I wrote, performed and recorded called ‘The Riduna Sound’.

The CD itself was borne out of some jovial conversations on a family holiday, and I sent it out to the family in the post with a mock press release without them having a clue about it. Some were initially taken in, others got me straight away, of course. But it gave us all something to chuckle about, and led to the book being written in what is now first draft status.

The songs came first, then characters were developed to match the style of each song (folk, pop, europop, electronics, thrash metal, indie, pub blues-rock). Consequently it is nigh on impossible to say who came first.

If your MC wrote books what genre would they be

The MC in ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ would at this early stage of their career not be contemplating writing a book, preferring to make a name as the lead reporter for the Wanderers at the Chronicle. I suppose any eventual move towards bound print would be anticipated as non-fiction, football (soccer) most likely. Events of SftSoR might lead down a different path though…

What does your MC never want their parental figure or mentor to know?

Keith is editor-in-chief at the Chronicle. My MC is half his age, and doesn’t want to Keith to know that on the one hand he has the MCs utmost respect as a boss, but also that the MC has eyes on his job at some point in the middle future. Also, that the MC is not as clueless about music as Keith is allowed to believe.

In your MC’s mind, what is the worst thing they have ever done.

In terms of the framing of ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’, by far and away the worst thing my MC has done is spend six hours in Southampton airport waiting for the fog to clear on a remote island in the English Channel so a plane can be caught to enable a job to start that the MC is only doing because the boss suggested it. Six hours waiting for fog to lift.

A close second is allowing the young woman in the Led Zeppelin t-shirt to slip away before she could give the leads she had hinted at earlier.

Right. Let’s do yesterday’s. Somewhere in my world I’d advise people to stay away from.

The MC meets singer Braye Babe at the gap in the Longis Wall. At the end of the wall, near the old nunnery and close to where the ice cream van sits, is a sewage treatment works, which reeks. Don’t go there.

#writingwonders 11 which I neglected yesterday: if my MC were to give their best friend one bit of advice what would it be? Why?

The MC in ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ doesn’t have a best friend as such, but would probably offer the following advice to Keisha:

Put the teabag in the mug, add a quarter inch of milk, add the boiling water, and stir until the colour is as brown as Keith likes it. Take the teabag out. Add the sugar and stir.

I suspect the ‘why’ might at this point by self-explanatory.

Does your MC have children? If not, do they want to?

The MC in ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ is only 24, and is single. However, it can be difficult not to see the other people in the newsroom as being childish, even though they are twice the age of the MC.

What does my MC see when they look out of their bedroom door/window?

For the entire duration of ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ the main character is not at home. However, this is the view that greets the first morning.

If your favourite side character had a theme song what would it be?

You may have already picked up that ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ is all about music 😂

All the side characters would imagine themselves having a theme song, but that might well be very different to the song I would attribute to them. And the trouble with having so many songs in my record/CD collection it is very difficult to pick just one that fits a character above all other songs. However, that isn’t going to stop me trying.

Let’s go for Kiki LeCoq, a young solo singer who has two or three jobs on the island and whose musical influences owe a great deal to her parents. Her theme song would possibly be … oh, I don’t know now: I was confident a minute ago … let’s say … the Abbey Road medley. There’s a bit of everything there, and I know it’s controversial saying it’s just one song, but I don’t care.

How much do I know about my side characters when writing my first draft?

When writing ‘Searching for the Sound of Riduna’ I had a fair idea of who I wanted the side characters to be. Sheridan Mesnes was always going to be a bit of an outsider, with a musical past he is fairly reluctant to share. I knew SYLT were going to be bored and provocative youths - what else could they do on the island other than rebel against the status quo, and I knew Kiki LeCoq was going to be the source of mystery and intrigue. As for the others, apart from being musical I sort of let their stories unfold as I wrote.
