#TwinCities Unions Planning ‘Largest US #RentStrike in 100+ Years’ as #ICEOccupation Drives #EvictionCrisis
“Tenants in #Minnesota are in a crisis,” said #Minneapolis City Council Member #AishaChughtai. “The federal invasion forced many of our neighbors to stay home and devastated our #LocalEconomy.”
Stephen Prager, Feb 17, 2026
"Tenant and labor unions in Minneapolis and St. Paul have announced plans to carry out what they said would be the 'largest rent strike in the United States in the last 100 years.'
"Beginning on #March1, if Democratic Minnesota Gov. #TimWalz does not meet their urgent demands for an #EvictionMoratorium and #RentRelief, a coalition of nearly 26,000 workers has pledged to withhold rent, which they said could create a massive economic disruption.
"The plans were announced on Tuesday by the tenants union #TwinCitiesTenants, which is joined by five labor unions: Service Employees International Union (#SEIU) Local 26, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota/Iowa, UNITE HERE Local 17, the Amalgamated Transit Union (#ATU) 1005, and Communication Workers of America (#CWA) 7250.
"They argued that a freeze on rents is desperately needed after 'nearly three months of federal occupation' under President Donald #Trump’s '#OperationMetroSurge,' which sent nearly 3,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE) and other immigration agents to the area, resulting in multiple fatal shootings and a wave of #CivilRights violations, including explicit #RacialProfiling."

So the building I used to live in that has no #RentControl was having an open house the other week. Once the word was out in the group chat, the tenants gathered at the lobby to warn prospective renters. I sped drew a warning sign and strapped it to my bike in front of the leasing office. It was a fun and wholesome day when a community came together for a common cause. #OntarioHousingCrisis #toronto #rentstrike

I dream of a world where we all collectively just refuse to pay for rent.
We could just do it. Just like that. What are the landlords gonna do about it if we act collectively? They are powerless. The only power they have is that we give them.
Houses are for living in, not for printing money for small-time proto-fascists who believe we have no right to even exist without paying for it.

Revenge of the #Renter
Hundreds of #tenants, struggling to afford skyrocketing rents, are refusing to pay their #landlords at all. They call it a #RentStrike. The landlords say it’s illegal. An inside look at the frontier of a growing #ClassWar
Jason McBride November 9, 2023
"33 King was an inexpensive, aging highrise, but it was a bastion of affordability in a city that seemed to grow more expensive every year. In 2010, the couple moved into a two-bedroom apartment on the top floor that rented for less than $1,000. Two years later they had their first child, Xavier. [Their rent initially was $700 a month. It has more than doubled!]
"Then, in 2013, the landlord, a company called Realstar, informed Henry that her rent was going up that year by 5.5 per cent. She was confused. 33 King was rent-controlled—increases were capped in 2013 at 2.5 per cent. But there was a loophole: in Ontario, landlords can apply for what’s called an above guideline increase, or #AGI, to make major repairs. Realstar fixed the roof and elevators that year, so Henry thought it might be a one-off. When it happened again the next year, with an increase of 3.8 per cent, well above that year’s 0.8 per cent guideline, she and her neighbours were incensed. They’d long talked about deteriorating conditions in the building and regular maintenance that seemed to go undone. Some felt the AGIs were simply a way for #Realstar to boost the value of its asset by squeezing extra money out of its tenants.
"In 2017, Henry started working on the assembly line at a Chrysler plant in nearby Brampton, and became a member of Unifor. It was the first time she’d joined a union, and it was exciting to be part of a group of people banding together to fight for their rights. Energized by that experience, in 2018, she helped form a tenants’ association at 33 King to fight future AGIs. Still, they kept coming—in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
That year, a company called #DreamUnlimited, a #realestate giant with $23 billion worth of assets, bought 33 King. Because the 2019 and 2021 AGIs were still pending approval by Ontario’s Landlord and Tenant Board, or LTB, Dream inherited the applications. Henry and other tenants wasted no time making their feelings about them known to the new owners. Working with the York South-Weston #TenantUnion, or YSWTU—an umbrella organization for 13 tenants’ associations in the area—they staged protests, called Dream’s president, Michael Cooper, and went to the media in a bid to have the AGIs cancelled.
"The movement hasn’t come without consequences. Dream has initiated eviction proceedings for more than 70 tenants at 33 King, and Starlight has started them for 75 in Thorncliffe Park. More are likely to come, but the strikers have remained resolute, the fear of losing their homes outweighed by the impossibility of continuing the status quo.
"Their fights are just beginning. Tenant #activism is flaring across the country as renters face skyrocketing rents and deteriorating living conditions in the most brutal #housing market in memory. Whatever their outcome, the Toronto rent strikes are the latest, loudest volley in a brewing class war."

Landlords in #Berkeley held a "celebration" of pandemic era eviction restrictions coming to an end.
Members of a local tenant union crashed the party and violent clashes broke out. Check out the report from TANC here.

"A protest against the Berkeley Property Owners Association’s celebration of the end of the city’s pandemic eviction moratorium on Tuesday night ended in fistfights and shoving matches, according to witnesses.
Nearly 100 protesters from the Berkeley Tenants Union and the Tenants and Neighborhood Councils assembled outside of the ironically named Freehouse Pub around 5 p.m. where around 40 landlords were gathering to fête the end of a policy that banned them from evicting tenants who couldn’t pay rent. As landlords entered the mixer, picketers chanted “See our might, see our power, landlords get no happy hour” and displayed signs reading “No peace for evictors.”'

This Saturday we will be doing a BBQ and public forum 12pm at Parc Lafontaine (Panet/Sherbrooke) to discuss the rent strike. We will be going over the "whys and hows" of this rent strike of 5,000 tenants. It would be very useful if people could boost :boostRequest::boostRequest::boostRequest: this event on the Fediverse, on other social media and in your friends-only group chats!
Check out the photos attached to the French version of this post of a few banners that have been dropped: https://social.edist.ro/@slammatu/110907410554223830
each out to us for your own banner or for helping in making one yourself! We can use as many tenants as possible hanging banners from their balcony.
In case of a strong rain forecast, we may move to 3714 Parc. We will send another email out if this is the case. Otherwise, we plan to have canopy tents and chairs at the Parc!
En solidarité!

We present here a form for Montrealers pledging to go on #RentStrike either in Fall 2023 or when we reach the requisite amount of pledges. The rent strike is against #Bill31 (#ProjetDuLoi31 or #PDL31) proposed by the #CAQ, for housing the unhoused, and against the rent increases that #Quebec landlords have been demanding of tenants.
https://cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view/az8TFuwxk7WPseVABEzja5o8sTLqpSj8+9E9X07VFGE/
If 5,001 people fill out this pledge (that's five thousand plus one), a rent strike will be called. If 5,001 people do not fill out this pledge, then anyone who has filled it out does not need to go on rent strike. The rent strike committee will contact you for strike meetings and to let you know if 5,001 pledges to strike have been received.

"Communities created by unhoused people can be places for revolutionary dreaming, rad mutual aid projects, and sites to mobilize political resistance to the criminalization of extreme poverty. Government-run encampments take away what can be empowering about living in an encampment by turning the encampment into a “service.” The institutionalization of encampments reinforces the carceral logic that unhoused people and poor people can only legally exist within a system that is designed to reform them, even if the only difference between being in the system and on the streets is whether it’s your tent or a tent issued by the city. Institutionalization also completely alienates the sense of community that characterizes most encampments on the streets; since the advent of contemporary homelessness in the early 80’s, people have banded together in community with friends and allies to protect themselves, their belongings, and each other. It is a natural form of survival and togetherness in lives that are way too often dangerous and incredibly isolated."

These outrageous acts of socioeconomic cleansing (see thread linked below) give the lie to all the mendacious claims that evictions of poor people’s encampments are about public health, safety, or “environmental impacts”. Even those that are exemplary models of minimizing those impacts are being evicted all over the country to appease landlords and upper-middle-income gentrifiers who have many times more detrimental effects on the local community and global ecology.
This is not about public safety, the environment, or even “quality of life”. It’s about maintaining extortionate housing prices and propping up the system of rentier capitalism by comprehensively criminalizing the mere act of existing anywhere, in any way whatsoever, without paying the banks and landlords their monthly pounds of flesh and engaging in the consumer economy at a level that the wealthy consider “respectable”.
There is simply no conceivable moral justification for this legalized neo-feudal protection racket, where if you don’t keep making skyrocketing extortion payments every month, the landlord / “property investor” class sends a band of sadistic psychopaths with guns to rob you of your belongings and displace you from your home by violent force.
This is happening practically everywhere and every day across the entire USA. And it’s not going to stop until people of conscience start organizing in large numbers to say, “No more! We won’t be forced to pay rent to live on the earth where we were born!” Every time these thugs show up for another round of evictions against the most marginalized people in this country, they need to start finding themselves faced with overwhelming resistance, including support for elements willing to engage in vigorous, forceful self-defense if necessary. That’s the only way we’re going to keep these crimes against humanity from continuing to accelerate.
This is, for me, on an equal footing with the climate and ecological emergency as the most urgent domestic problem in the US today, and it is inextricably intertwined with all the others. If we have no right to exist (and no, something we have to purchase is not a right - it’s a commodity), then none of our other rights count for a goddamn thing. This country’s unhoused people are on the front lines of one of the most crucial and urgent social justice struggles of our time, and need a hell of a lot more solidarity than they’re currently getting. Let’s all step up!

Let's accelerate our journey to end #HouseHoarding THIS year, in 2023! https://eugenerentstrike.org/

It is the beginning of the month! Are you a PoC too far behind on your rent to the slavemaster, and getting evicted illegally?
Maybe watch this[1] #Free full-length documentary on how the settlers who colonized the North American continent segregated and impoverished through something called a ¨racial covenant¨ written right onto the deeds. Then start cussing out your landlords because their ancestors manufactured urban poverty.
Doc has a great intro to the parent idea of racial covenants, which are called ¨restrictive covenants¨ and involve ¨redlining¨ as ways the early whites settled towns, dividing the PoCs to live in the ¨undesirable¨ neighborhoods and all the white settlers to the favorable ones.
Images on this post EXPLICITLY state the wishes of the white settlers to push the colored folks into the littlest boxes in the sickest parts of the towns.
Ecosteader corporate papers explicitly incorporate anti-racist ideals into our urban planning and #CommunityWealth ideals; to correctly acknowledge the correct things, we cannot build our land acknowledgements on incorrect and short-sighted colonial-worded deeds perpetuated by racism that has been PROVEN BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.
REAL ESTATE BROKERAGES.
Brokers are the top realty agents whose models rent out a bunch of desks and ¨rights¨ to use signs and legal papers (colonial deed system) and the database of properties for sale to aspiring Brokers (Realtors).
Brokerages are, at the most simple definition, pyramid schemes. For another glimpse into the illegal eviction machine that only the people can stop, video [2].
