Why One Man Is Fighting for Our Right to Control Our #GarageDoor Openers
If companies can modify internet-connected products and charge subscriptions after people have already purchased them, what does it mean to own anything anymore?
After frustration with #Chamberlain's #MyQ and shutting out 3rd Parties, he developed #RATGDO, for Rage Against the #GarageDoorOpener, an #Esp32 based that workds over your local network using #ESPHome or #HomeKit.

Garage doors, #enshitified with wireless. The home I bought has some 10 year old Liftmasters that work with #Ratgdo controllers. Even the fact that those workarounds are required for the utterly horrible MyQ devices was enough to swear me off of intentionally buying #Chamberlain products, but their need to continually make worse products takes it further. https://www.theverge.com/tech/839294/chamberlain-myq-garage-door-opener-update-blocks-aftermarket-controllers #smarthome

RE: https://mas.to/@okurth/115662995700749262
I bought two #ratgdo units when they first came out, and use them with #esphome . Much better experience than the MyQ stuff ever was.
Highly recommended.

I have basically finished my post about how to configure Home Assistant Quick Actions on CarPlay but I can't publish it because I botched one of the screenshots!

I've now collected 4 of the 5 stones needed to complete the #smarthome protocol infinity gauntlet after deploying an #ESPHome device (#ratgdo) for the first time last night.
Once completed, I'll be able to decrease my home's electricity usage by 50% at the snap of my fingers.
The only question - what's the fifth stone???
1. MQTT
2. Zigbee
3. Z-Wave
4. ESPHome
5. ??? -
If you have a garage door opener that uses MyQ(who recently killed API access, in a rent-seeking move), I'd highly suggest replacing it with a RATGCO board. Lots of integration options, and all local. https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo/ #ratgdo #enshittification #cloudfree

After a wasted evening trying to work around the vendor lock-in of my chamberlain security+ garage door opener, I gave up and bought a #ratgdo (wifi control board) . Works perfectly with #homeassistant , took me about 30 minutes to install -- which was partially spent rerunning wires to the existing switch. I've got more rewiring I'd like to do, but it _works_.
EXACTLY LIKE IT CLAIMS TO. Amazing that this was only about $50.
Kudos to Paul Wieland.

Soldered some headers on an #esp32 this evening (I had the iron out already for another security camera install).
I SUCK at soldering, but think I did it all in one pass, no cold joints, no bridges. Flashed #ratgdo on it to prove I didn't fry the part. Might swap it out for the #esp2866 's that I have to see if everything really is connected.

...and now my Home Assistant connected ratgdo is successfully controlling the garage door again. I haven't touched it since last night.
🤷♂️ I guess I'll hold off on re-flashing to the ESP32 firmware.

My dream of controlling my garage door with ratgdo has hit a snag. I can see the status, but I can't control door any more.
Apparently this issue is somewhat common so I'm hoping for a software fix soon...but I have no idea because the GitHub repo's issues section is closed off.
I guess I have to have some "maker faith”.

Ok got my RATGDO ( https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo/ ) the other day, and finally had some time to go poking at it to get it wired in.
*SLIGHTLY* unintuitive setup, but once you realize it's fully man-in-the-middling the wall unit (I.E. wall unit goes into the big connector, small leads into the actual garage door opener) it's all good.
I've unluckily found that two of my 3 wall controls are effectively 78LMs, ergo they are dumb. The big button works, but lock and light don't. Bummer.
Looking at 889LMs to replace those, and I need to pull out the unit that's still in a box and test if I need 2 or 3 of those. If anyone knows of a cheaper 'digital' option that works properly with RATGDO let me know.
Otherwise, this is pretty solid, no complaints, slightly with the ESPHome firmware had Security+1.0 support, but overall that's a VERY minor grumble.
Would recommend.

I have received my #RATGDO !!! (Rage Against The Garage Door Opener)
https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo
I can now free my #Chamberlain #GarageDoorOpener from #myQ #enshittification
- no more ads when I want to control my garage door (really: the myQ app keeps pushing ads for add-on hardware and subscriptions)
- my garage door opener will now be locally controlled via ESPHome
- it will be fully integrated with my #HomeAssistant system
- notifications will be immediate (myQ notifications are not instant, which renders them useless)
- no dependency on third-party cloud servers (I don't need to worry about myQ servers being down or worse, compromised)
I am also going to disable integrated wi-fi connectivity and delete my myQ account to make sure that my opener never gets an OTA "upgrade" without my consent
I have already installed the ESPHOme firmware and am currently printing an enclosure: https://www.printables.com/model/602600-ratgdo-v20-v25-v25i-pcb-enclosure

We recently had our garage door replaced, along with a #Chamberlain garage opener, connected with #MyQ, since this is basically the only option available in Canadian big box stores (LiftMaster and Craftsman GDOs are part of the Chamberlain Group)
The #HomeAssistant / MyQ integration worked for a whole TWO days, then Chamberlain decided to disable third-party access to their API, forcing everyone to use their proprietary MyQ app, via their cloud servers (talk about timing: I thought I had broken my HA automation, then I read that it had quit working for EVERYONE, so not my fault)
Anyway, 10 minutes ago I received a notification that my #RATGDO has shipped. When I have installed it, I can say goodbye to MyQ, and delete my account so that my opener doesn't communicate with Chamberlain's servers ever egain
Garage door automation will then be entirely local, and fully integrated with my HomeAssistant system, which will be so much more convenient

Got a D1 mini (clone) that refuses to respond over serial. 3.3 or 5V power, USB or TX/RX pins... very weird! No talkie in boot mode or normal mode.
I was trying really hard not to have to solder pins into my #ESP32, since I am horrible at soldering, but welp... guess that's next in my agenda.
On the bright side one of my #ratgdo is installed, and working fantastic with #homeassistant #esphome !

Installed the #ratgdo tonight on my garage door. Now I’m free of MyQ constantly killing the #homeassistant device handler. I realize only a few folks will know what I’m taking about here lol. #homeautomation
