  6. A quotation from Bernard Levin

You don’t need to be a genius or a sage to realise — realise, not know, let alone work out — that there is no easy path to great wealth (or to anything useful) because if there were, the poor would be in a very small minority, and everybody else would be stinking rich.

Bernard Levin (1928-2004) British journalist, critic, broadcaster, satirist
Essay (1989-03-23), “Do You Seriously Want to Be Swindled?” The Times, London

  7. Use this tip today:

In your "Rags to Riches" story, invert the male and female characters. Cinderella is now Cinderello, and he has two mean step-brothers, and it is the princess who opens up the palace for a ball, how would you tell that story?

This is the end of today's long thread at #BetterStories. Stay with us tomorrow to... put everything we learned today upside down!

With Stephen King, as he DISAGREES about story structure.

  8. What other stories do you know that can fit in this plot structure, "Rags to Riches"?

Can you identify any of the story building blocks?

For instance, how is the "new world" into which the characters are ushered at the end of the story? Is there a couple formed?

  9. One more story broken down: Aladdin (based on the 1992 movie)

MAGIC WEAPONS - The Genie in the lamp. He provides three wishes (rule of three)

HERO’S TRANSFORMATION - Aladdin could have used her third wish to become a prince. However, he wishes the Genie free showing he has grown in empathy and understands what's really important

NEW WORLD - In the One Thousand Nights book, they actually take over the kingdom. In the movie, they sing “A whole new world”

  10. Let's break down one classical story that follows the archetype: THE UGLY DUCKLING

HERO’S TRANSFORMATION- A swan duckling transforms from an ugly youngster into a beautiful adult

SECONDARY CHARACTERS - The ugly duckling brothers are “dark alter-egos” that make fun of him (more on secondary characters next week)

THRILLING ESCAPE FROM DEATH - Seeing his reflection in the water, realises he’s a swan (OK, maybe not so “thrilling”)

  11. "Rags to Riches" story building blocks continued:

9- NEW KINGDOM. Archetypally, hero-ine rejoins their better half, and they inhering a new kindgom over which they will reign.

Cinderella marries the prince and becomes the queen of the kindgom.

Those are the nine building blocks when writing a "Rags to Riches" story.

    Let's see now some examples!

  12. "Rags to Riches" story building blocks continued

7- CENTRAL CRISIS. The moment of realisation by the hero-ine that they don't need any magic powers to confront the evil power. In Rags to Riches this block has less impact than in other archetypes (such as Overcoming the Monster)

8- THRILLING ESCAPE FROM DEATH. Things are about to go wrong but they're fixed at the end. In Cinderella's story, this is when she almost doesn't try on the glass shoe when the prince visits her home

    #RagsToRiches 6/11

  13. "Rags to Riches" story building blocks continued:

5- FRUSTRATION. Remember the drop in "fortune" in Vonnegut's diagram? This is when things get wrong at first. Cinderella has lost her shoe.

6- HERO'S TRANSFORMATION. In an archetypal story, the hero-ine must come up transformed for the story to resolve.

In some Cinderella versions she accomplishes revenge against her stepmother and sisters. In others, she forgives them.

    #RagsToRiches 5/11

  14. "Rags to Riches" story building blocks continued:

3- RULE OF THREE. Multitude of stories use the rule of three. In Perrault version of Cinderella, the Prince throws three balls until the final showdown.

4- SECONDARY CHARACTERS. In this archetype, it's important to have scornful dark characters that antagonise the hero-ine. These are Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters.

    #RagsToRiches 4/11

  15. Here are 9 "story building blocks" of the archetype "Rags to Riches".

If you want to write a story like Cinderella (but on whatever other topic), you just need to fill in the following parts:

1- THE CALL. How is the hero-ine thrown into the action? For Cinderella, this is when she knows of the prince's ball.

2- MAGIC WEAPONS. They help the hero-ine along the way but disappear in the end. This is Cinderella's fairy.

    3/11 #RagsToRiches

  16. Booker also found this plot, and called it "Rags to Riches". The clothes (rags) are a metaphor for the internal transformation of the hero-ine

In this plot, it's common to be introduced to the hero-ine in their youth. Sometimes they're orphan and even maltreated.

Magical helpers (such as the fairy) contribute but must disappear at the resolution.

That's why an archetypally well-built resolution relies on the protagonist having acquired maturity to fence for themselves

Clivefrog77 makes these nice gaming dioramas, often based on European Commodore 64 games, and sells them on eBay. He has a page on Google Photos. I'm not sure if all of those are his, but a lot seem to be.

  18. Oh Crypto Bro, you rose too fast
From copious wealth came heartache at last
Your funds and dreams you squandered away
Your rise and fall in a single day

Your hopes of fortune and lack of due care
Your legacy left to those who now stare
At the tales of a crypto bro who fell
And the lessons that we can now tell

Take #HoratioAlger, the 19th c American writer synonymous with #RagsToRiches thanks to the enormous volume of stories he wrote about young, male "street urchins" rising to positions of power. There are many problems with Alger's work and our conception of it. For starters, 19th c American street kids *overwhelmingly* lived and died in stagnant, grinding poverty. Nineteenth century America was not a country of ex-homeless kids who rose to positions of wealth and prominence.
