Mouse studies find that the filamentous form of the common fungus *Mucor racemosus*, when present in the gut, confers some protection against radiation by producing amino acids that support DNA repair (L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and DL-lysine), and also promoting the production of radioprotective methionine by an intestinal bacterium.
