  1. Lilbits: F-Droid warns that Google’s plans for Android could doom FOSS app stores, there’s a new Kindle jailbreak, and Microsoft is bringing “vibe working” to MS Office

Unlike Apple, Google has always made it relatively easy for users to install Android apps from sources other than the company’s official app store. But recently the company announced that it will block installation of apps that come from unverified developers – basically developers who are unwilling or unable to verify their identity with Google for one reason or another.

    While Google is […]

  3. Rabbit R1 becomes a vibe coding handheld with rabbitOS 2 update

The Rabbit R1 is a $199 handheld with a distinctive orange plastic design featuring a 2.88 inch touchscreen display, a push-to-talk button, and a scroll wheel. When it was first unveiled last year the company made big promises that it’d be an AI gadget that could perform all sorts of actions on your behalf.

But once it began shipping, it became clear that the Rabbit R1 was just a cheap, […]

  9. Lilbits: Google without Chrome, Rabbit R1 gets (a little) more useful, and Pine64’s new camera

The US Department of Justice wants to break up Google. After launching to horrible reviews earlier this year, the Rabbit R1 is getting a little more useful through software updates. Pine64 stuck a 2MP camera on the end of a tiny computer with a RISC-V and ARM processor. And Google may be done with tablets… again.

Here’s a roundup of recent tech news from around the web.

The US Department of Justice wants to force Google to spin off Chrome, make other changes [Techmeme]

If you’ve seen any tech news today, you’ve probably seen this one. But the long and short of it is that the US government alleges that Google has violated antitrust laws by leveraging its Chrome web browser, Android mobile operating system, and Google search engine to create a sort of inescapable Google experience.

    Google Chrome

One proposed solution? Make Google sell off its web browser and maybe even its mobile operating system. But it’s unclear to me what that would actually mean for the general public that uses these apps and services – it would certainly be a setback for Google that could theoretically lead to increased competition.

But a big part of the reason Google offers Chrome and Android for free is that they’re bundled with Google search and other apps in a way that helps Google make a LOT of money from advertising. Would an independent Chrome browser be a financially viable product? I guess that depends on who buys it and what changes they implement. This is all hypothetical until a judge rules early next year though.

Teach mode, Rabbit’s tool for automating R1 tasks, is now available to all users [Engadget]

The Rabbit R1 is inching closer to living up to its potential. The long-promised “teach mode” is now available in beta, allowing users to train the R1 to interact with websites on their behalf. Theoretically this opens the door to doing things like ordering groceries for you, but right now the simplest functions are things that it’d probably be easier to do manually.

Android will soon instantly log you in to your apps on new devices [Ars Technica]

    Restore Credentials

When you set up a new Android phone, odds are that you’ll have the chance to import your apps and data from your old phone. One thing that you normally still need to do though, is login to most of your apps. But Google has introduced a new Restore Credentials feature that could save you the trouble… assuming third-party developers update their apps to use the feature.

November Update: Something Borrowed Something New [Pine64]

    Pinecam

The company behind the PinePhone, PineBook, PineTab, and PineNote line of hacker-friendly products is returning to putting out monthly progress/status updates. The latest brings news of a new PineCam featuring a SG2000 RISC-V + ARM processor and a 2MP camera. The RISC-V powered PineTab V has also received a small hardware update: it now has an accelerometer and status LED as well as some bug fixes.

Google Cancels Pixel Tablet Development [Android Authority]

I’d take this with a grain of salt, because Google has been making tablets in one form or another on and off for more than a decade. Yesterday Android Headlines reported that Google was still planning to release a Pixel Tablet 2 in 2025, but that the tablet after that had been canceled. Now Android Authority reports that BOTH tablets are canceled. Not only will there not be a Pixel Tablet 3, but there won’t be a Pixel Tablet 2.

  14. Lilbits: Intel Lunar Lake lineup leaked, Rabbit R1’s security fail, and the FCC could require carriers to unlock smartphones within 60 days, Rabbit R1

The Rabbit R1 has been off to a rough start. When the portable AI device hit the streets in May it was widely panned by reviewers for its limited functionality and unreliable performance. It turns out the company also failed to protect user data: a team of folks who have been working to jailbreak the Rabbit R1 say they discovered a set of hardcoded API keys that […]

  15. Lilbits: Cake wants to turn your Apple Watch into a phone, Dillo returns from the dead, and removing ads from Windows 11

Smartphones may be incredibly useful gadgets that let you do everything from banking to gaming to keeping up with friends. But they’re also incredibly distracting devices that can eat up way more of your time than you’d like, which is why we’ve seen a growing number of attempts to bring back “dumb phones” that just make calls, send […]

  16. The main problem with Rabbit R1 really is that it could just be an app. There’s no reason any of these AI devices should be designed as dedicated devices like this.

The discovery that Rabbit is using Android under the hood really proves this. And their defense is inadequate to prove their need for the design.

Just make a phone. Make a Rabbit phone if you sincerely believe this design is required to make their LAM work. You’re already almost there.

I don’t want MORE devices. I, especially, don’t want a dedicated device doing something that literally is an app.

Not can be an app. It is an app. It’s already an app. Rabbit R1 is an app.

Large Action Models do sound pretty interesting. But this product is nonsense.

Also Marques Brownlee isn’t going to kill them with a negative review. They’re going to die on the hill they’re defending by releasing an app as hardware.

  27. It’s worth noting that other companies already in this space are already looking to enhance their existing technologies with new capabilities and enhancements that companies like Rabbit are exploiting, but likely more first party. Apple is actually rumored to be enhancing Siri.

So by pushing a standalone device, Rabbit could, actually, be putting themselves at risk of being just a flash in the pan.

    And…of course…generating e-waste.

    #RabbitAI #RabbitR1 #Rabbit #Enshitification #EWaste

  28. Bear in mind the device, itself, does zero AI inference. The device, itself, is a connected device that acts as a communication intermediary and all of the intelligence is server-side. The device, itself, is literally a phone with WAY less capability than existing phones.

The device doesn’t do anything phones don’t already do.

It could, easily, be an app.

    #RabbitAI #RabbitR1 #Rabbit #Enshitification #EWaste

  29. So….Rabbit AI….

In pushing hardware, it’s another AI cash grab.

It could, easily, be a smartphone app. It doesn’t need to be a device. I don’t want more devices. If we’re going to look to add smarts to our life, let’s ensmarten our existing devices.

This could have been a really good idea…as an app. Instead, they chose to be a generator of e-waste.
