  1. the linux version of chrome is essentialy private space for chromeOS, because its essentially a version of the chrome browser that's *not* tied to the operating system itself.

this was not the case with lacros, which, while allowing multiple chrome profiles, was still tied to the os.

and that is why, i think, google should legitimately make and maybe market something more like *that* as a "thing".

    it's better than lacros.

  5. the linux version of chrome should be available on the google play store for chromebook.

to be used alongside / separate from the built in version of chrome

this would be a hearty substitute for lacros

    it'd be better than lacros

    lacros allowed multiple browser profiles

but the profiles were integrated into the operating system

the linux version of chrome on chromeos is not integrated into the OS which is a good thing.

  8. draft - debian software on chromeOS with linux enabled?

    i'm googling firefox debian.

it seems once you have the linux thing setup for chromeOS, for the linux additional sandboxed version of the chrome browser for linux that's not tied to chromeOS itself (hence sandboxed which is a good thing if you're looking for a sandboxed chrome browser that isn't tied to chromeOS / android services, which is what i am looking for) then you just download the debian version on google's official website. and then you can just click to install the package, - no command line necesary. so then am i correct to assume that any linux software i want i just search for "debian" version of it on google or?

and another thing someone told me is to make sure to enable the flag "Crostini GPU Support" in chrome://flags

  10. dear google please just keep the lacros flag or at least immediately replace it with a "enable chrome profiles" flag.

chrome profiles are too important to get rid of.

  12. LaCrOs on chromeOS - multiple chrome profiles -

"I have been using the LaCrOs version of Chrome for more than a year, and I was devastated when I read Robby’s post about Google shutting down the LaCrOs experiment in the near future. “Devastated” might seem like a bit of an overstatement, but let me explain.

    Don’t take away my profiles!
The most valuable feature of LaCrOs was the ability to create multiple Chrome profiles. To those of you who use a Mac or PC as your primary device, [chrome profiles have always been available.]"

For some reason, chrome profiles were not available on chromeOS until the lacros flag was made available in 2022. this greatly increases the utility of chromebook by allowing users to seamlessly switch between chrome profiles as can be done on windows and mac.

  14. I don't post a lot of Chromebook/ChromeOS stuff; this might be of interest to some Chromebook geek somewhere. Seems obvious once you think of it, but I haven't had my head buried in Lacros (LaCrOs or w/e) either.

  16. chromeos is no good for data segregation. i saw this chromeos laptop i thought would be good. i thought lacros was staying and expanding. the problem is, i need to be using a windows computer when i sit here becuase i like to be logged into the user where its "google umbrella acount B-esque" in windows, where i can have a chrome profile logged into the google umbrella account A. i have that setup already on a 2020 windows 10 laptop. and i think i sorta regret using the money to get this chromebook even though its nice. but for my needs, a windows 11 laptop would have maybe made more sense. even though i can't stand that microsoft doesn't force all pc makers to have 2 USBC power delivery ports like google forces chromebook makers to do. god damnit microsoft. get with the fuckin program.

  20. with lacros going away, will we still be able to have chome profiles?

    i ask because according to

    support.google.com/chromeos-be

"With this change, there will be no impact to Chromebooks users."

But this would be a big impact for users who have grown accustomed to being able to use chrome profiles. so "no impact" is a lie. will chrome profiles be added in chromeOS128 or what...

  22. draft - lacros makes chromebook more like a windows type computer (in a good way) by allowing browser profiles inside one user space. multiple users is important too, but the ability to have browser profiles in one user space is also very important. why would google allow browser profiles on a competing operating system by microsoft and not allow it on their own operating system?

    #lacros
    #chromeos
    #chromebook

something here feels like it's microsoft telling google what they can and can't do. it feels like a microsoft thing here.

something like microsoft saying to google "you can't do lacros because we don't want chromebooks eating into windows laptop sales and lacros is too "good" for chromebook. or something like that.

this is all just rough draft and speculation and fiction. but sometimes i gotta vent about these things. i'm trying to understand what's going on.

someone also mentioned with the android stuff, can we finally more easily install apks?

  23. @bradlinder

Will we still be able to use browser profiles inside of a user space on chromeOS? that felt like the main "feature" of lacros, in addition to all the backend stuff.

  24. chromebook lacros removal comment that I agree with:

"This is terrible. The LaCros setting via Chrome flags allows the Chromebook version of Chrome to function like the regular desktop browser like those on Mac and Windows. Why kill this? In fact ChromeOS and Chromebooks need to become more like Windows or Mac to retain power users. I'm only using a Chromebook for a combination of curiosity about the Google OS features, and aspects like using Linux and other more advanced desktop settings. Removing advanced features like this will push me and other users away. "
