  3. The first coloured Grand Lodge in the USA was formed as African Grand Lodge of North America, and stemmed from African Lodge 459, which met at the Golden Fleece on Water Street, Boston.

    On 24 July 1808 the Grand Lodge changed its name to Prince Hall Grand Lodge. F&AM of Massachusetts.

    Prince Hall had died on 4 December 1807, and was buried in Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Boston.

  5. On 6 March 1775, the Master of Military Lodge 441 in Castle William, Boston, conferred Degrees on fifteen coloured men. This is the first record of coloured Masons In the USA. One of their number was Prince Hall, who later formed the first Grand Lodge named after him.

    Military Lodge 441 later moved to New York and was one of several Lodges which formed the first (white) Grand Lodge there.

    With the amalgamation of the Ancient and Moderns to form one Grand Lodge of England, in 1813, the Prince Hall Grand Lodges were temporarily dropped from the roll.
