  1. The #ATO Australian Tax Return for Companies is a #poordesign form. It is a multi-page form, with numbered item sections, and then letter labels for individual fields. However the combination of page + item number + label letter is not unique, so you have to refer to items by their full name. e.g. page 6, item 8 - label K, could refer to item K - Commercial Debt forgiveness, or K - Unfranked dividends paid.

  2. Stuff is having a little trumpet about it's new look home page. They say "All of these changes are grounded in feedback (from users)" and one of the major "features" they're celebrating is "Larger preview images".

I didn't ask for that. Did anyone?

The problem is in most cases they've only changed the code which displays the thumbnail, while the original image remains it's original tiny size.

As an example, you can make a 200x250 pixel image display as 400x500 pixels. It's four times the size with no new pixels added. It loads fast but it looks awful.

And that's how they ended up with this sort of pixelated mess. It's hard to imagine that nobody at Stuff has noticed the badly degraded images on their front page.

  3. As I’m closing laptops getting ready to help with some chores for the holiday my son lets me know his humidifier a.co/d/78PLQta has stopped working. I’m thinking something minor, well what we have here is comical. Either the microchip (ic1) failed due to an overload by itself or the seal was compromised and water intrusion caused it to fail. Anyway it was purchased in June 2023 for 30 USD plus tax. The module itself WKP-015D aliexpress.us/item/32568060125 is available on AliExpress for 12.72 USD plus shipping which is essentially 50% the cost of a new one with tax. The problem is the revision of board is the same so it’ll fail exactly the same way again which means it’s now trash. We could probably replace the individual microcontroller and other bits here and there but it’d be cheaper and quicker to just buy a new one. The real issue here is the poor design. I’d say it’s an Amazon problem but it’s getting worse and more prevalent everywhere. It’d probably be easier to get him a hot plate and have him boil water into the atmosphere than to try and go through all of the cheaply and poorly designed humidifiers online. Every year I feel like it gets even worse. Poorly designed and manufactured Chinese goods are doing 📈 and the rest of the worlds wallets are doing 📉 where is the bottom?!

  4. @ton @technews Or it simply comes down to the fundamentally #poordesign of the #law and #enforcement. In my opinion, the #Commission has taken on far too many initiatives in the current legislative period and turned them into laws. Unfortunately, a lot has been poorly thought out. And the repairs are also taking their time.

  5. Doing maintenance on my son’s Lenovo Legion T5. Glad i checked before ordering an aftermarket cooler, because the cooler on this AM4 AMD motherboard is NOT AM4 cooler compatible .. it’s in fact Intel measurements between the mounting holes and backplate .. Yes i have the crate it came in, and havw checked it - no conversion brackets included .. #pcgaming #pcgamers #pcmasterrace #lenovo #legion #amd #poordesign #baddesign

  6. The cookie consent popups, that take 2 minutes to "save settings" after you click "decline all" is the ultimative spite-design ever.

"Well.. If you don't want my cookies I'll just let you sit there and stare like an idiot. I might kick you in the balls too"

If I then have to close an additional two popups with newsletter or offers or crap, I'm DDOS.... Going to bitch about you online.

  7. @TRyanGregory Key paragraph:

“The authors cautioned that HCWs could have been infected outside of the hospital and that the results may not apply to other countries because of differences in treatment effects.” /2
