More seriously, I fear these sorts of application-specific displays are going to go the way of the dodo. It's gotten to the point where a reasonably large pixel-mapped display is, to a first approximation, free. Slap one of those on top of your MCU board and you're done - no designing a custom panel, laying out LEDs, multipin connectors to run all the LEDs... and the actual usability of the things will probably tank, because then the display is "just software", and we know how excellent white goods makers are at software...

  20. So I'm looking at a bad board out of (I think) a 4-burner electric cooktop. The date on the board is 2014. And this thing has a 32-bit, 50 MHz SOC with so many features and I/O channels and everything else that it's practically criminal. It can't have but 4 burner control knobs as input, and I doubt there was any kind of pixel-mapped display in it.

It's even the absolute top part number in this MCU's range.

This thing could emulate any 16-bit system you could name with half its transistors tied behind its back, and here it is serving as a glorified 4-channel PID controller.

  35. I have so many random things to toot about right now. Which to choose, which to choose...

    I'm being gaslit by a $10 radio.

I ordered a cheap AM/FM/shortwave radio from China, the kind of product that is sold by 100 companies, each of which buy it from the same manufacturer, print their company name on the front, and ship it. They are all identical. I wanted a shortwave receiver for the hell of it, and wasn't going to pony up for a good one until I know I'm interested.

The controls for it are essentially all little plastic pushbuttons on the front face, backed by those cheap clicky tactile buttons you mount on circuit boards. Even the power button! It's purely a soft on/off.

I have it sitting on my desk. And since I got it, I keep coming back to my office and regularly finding it is on. A few times it seemed that something on my desk slid against it and hit the power button. But most of the time, that seemed unlikely, but it kept happening. I thought I was losing my mind.

Then yesterday, it was in my field of vision when it actually turned on right in front of me. It was exactly when its built-in clock (of course it has a built-in clock...) ticked over from 12:00 midnight to 12:01. Easy to notice, because the screen backlight comes on. So it's a software bug...

Now I know it's not me.
