  3. I have so many random things to toot about right now. Which to choose, which to choose...

    I'm being gaslit by a $10 radio.

I ordered a cheap AM/FM/shortwave radio from China, the kind of product that is sold by 100 companies, each of which buy it from the same manufacturer, print their company name on the front, and ship it. They are all identical. I wanted a shortwave receiver for the hell of it, and wasn't going to pony up for a good one until I know I'm interested.

The controls for it are essentially all little plastic pushbuttons on the front face, backed by those cheap clicky tactile buttons you mount on circuit boards. Even the power button! It's purely a soft on/off.

I have it sitting on my desk. And since I got it, I keep coming back to my office and regularly finding it is on. A few times it seemed that something on my desk slid against it and hit the power button. But most of the time, that seemed unlikely, but it kept happening. I thought I was losing my mind.

Then yesterday, it was in my field of vision when it actually turned on right in front of me. It was exactly when its built-in clock (of course it has a built-in clock...) ticked over from 12:00 midnight to 12:01. Easy to notice, because the screen backlight comes on. So it's a software bug...

Now I know it's not me.

  6. Our five year old "commercial technology" washing machine stopped working today. Thanks to DYI repair videos, I was able to run a diagnostic to see the error code and identify the clutch slider as the culprit (of course the manufacturer's website was of no use here).

I could have ordered a replacement part online for about 50 $CAD but the part design is so bad that I preferred repairing the broken part instead.

The steel ring around the slider is held with only six small plastic "pegs" about 3mm in diameter. Those pegs broke off from the repeated actuation of the clutch during normal operation (electromagnet exerting an axial force on the steel ring). I drilled small holes in the plastic slider in which I self-tapped 3x4mm set screws (aka grub screws). I slid the steel ring back on and backed out the screws so they would engage in the ring.

  12. What does it take to design artistic mass-market goods? Producibility.

For his designs of household appliances and kitchen gadgets, Italian Pino Spagnolo looked beyond aesthetic and emotional factors to the cost of materials, which affects the final price of the item.

From the late 1980s, Spagnolo's design studio specialised in transposing day-to-day dreariness into the world of art. He did this not only with kitchenware—coffee pots, corkscrews, cutlery, vases, and bar sets—but also in transportation (motorcycles, trains, yachts) and interior architecture.

Producibility was key to the Turin-based design studio's success: understanding the production technologies of the company commissioning a design. To bring art into day-to-day household work, a manufacturer must be able to profitably make and sell an object at the right price.
