  1. I had just gotten home and was taking pics of the bristle millipedes that come out at night to browse the lichen on the stonework, when a neighbour, a middle-aged lady I sort of recognized but had never really spoken to, passed by and asked what I was doing, if I was making a movie or whatever. I explained I was looking at bugs and showed her the bristle millipedes. She excitedly said she liked bugs as well, cicadas and beetles and butterflies and such, and we mutually enthused for a few minutes. I guess talking to neighbours is sometimes worth it.

  5. Bristle millipedes (Polyxenidae) tootling around feeding on crustose lichen. For scale, those are honey locust (_Gleditsia triacanthos_) leaves.

  10. The rain has been a boon for the bristle millipedes (Polyxenidae) on the stone slabs of the walkway walls.

  12. Indulged in a late night photoshoot with the bristle millipedes (Polyxenida, probably genus _Polyxenus_) that come out to browse on the stone walls around the garden. Saw the absolute tiniest bristlepede ever!

For far better close-up pictures, see e.g. BugGuide: bugguide.net/node/view/19106/b

  20. The final pic relating to this slime mold scene is of a bristly millipede (Polyxenus lagurus, I think), a group I had never heard of before. They have detachable rear bristles that apparently function like grappling hooks and can be deployed against ants and spiders. Details of that in linked paper if you need more. #millipedes #Diplopoda #Polyxenidae #arthropods #nature #biology
