I was pleased with myself: I'd succeeded in getting Mayree, the reclusive woman who lived at the edge of the marsh, to come on a walk with me. The golden hour light was polishing the edges of the long grass to a sharp green glow. A song sparrow, #perched on a swamp dogwood, was pouring out its heart.

Mayree paused by a branching plant with umbel flowers and smiled blissfully. "It makes me so happy to know a poisonous plant," she said. "It gives me such a sense of power."
