  1. I had an interesting evening today. I purchased a 2TB NVME SSD for my PC for my Timeshift backups and realised as soon as I plug it in, 2 of my 6 SATA ports stopped working.

It’s the Gigabyte AB350M motherboard. Is it a bandwidth issue perhaps? The rest 4 SATA ports were labelled “Chipset SATA Port” so I don’t know yet.

The kicker is, my boot SSD and HDD were hooked to these ports and as soon as I plugged it in, I couldn’t boot to Linux.

This was an inconvenience as I had to plug my drives’ SATA cables to the chipset ports but the fact that this happened is mildly annoying.

It’s all good in the end. I am cp -rf over the timeshift directory to the NVME drive now.

If someone knows why this happens, let me know.

  4. Well, I just ordered more memory for my desktop to deal with some memory-bound slowdowns I've been experiencing lately. I don't have evidence, but I suspect that some of the AI "features" that are being forcefully added by everyone may have something to do it.

    Do not like.

  13. Successfully replaced the power supply in my PC. Doing this makes me reconsider buying a micro ATX case for the nas build. I'm moderately dexterous, but I am not rolling any nat 20's required for that type of manipulation. #PcUpgrades

  17. I think I am done with PC upgrades for couple of years atleast now.
Switched my radeon 5700xt with RX6800 ( non-xt version ) and replaced stock wraith cooler with NZXT kraken elite AIO.
so current config is.. ryzen 5900x, 48gb ram, RX6800. Also found out that screen on AIO pump can also show animated GIFs. so this is now my display ...

One issue discovered so far is that AMD's software autodetected and installed AMD pro drivers for the card, but they do not work with davinci resolve. so had to downgrade(?) to Adrenaline drivers.
I know AMD vs Nvidia opinion wars can be brutal, but for my money, 6800 was way cheaper than equivalent nvidia GPU and it works with everything I use and dated gaming needs I have. And most importantly black friday deals and the fact that my coworkers snapped up all parts that came out of my desktop made this upgrade very cost-effective for me.

  21. My new #SSD arrived today.

It's a Crucial Technologies T500 2gb Gen4 NVMe m.2 SSD. I have no idea if my computer's PCIe is Gen3 or Gen4. Probably Gen3, but if so it just won't be "as" fast. I'm coming from a hard disk so it's all fast.

I think I've done all the back-ups I'm going to do and it's time to install the solid state drive and attempt to clone my hard disk drive.

I'm shutting down my PC as soon as I post this message.
    Wish me luck.

  23. Dammit... why the fuck can't anything be simple.

Replacement CPU arrived, and now the system won't post.

I'm assuming it's because I need a BIOS update on this B450 board to make it work with the 5600G CPU.

To do that... I NEED to have a CPU installed.

Which now means I've got to strip down another system, borrow the 3300X CPU from it just to make this one post so I can update the fucking BIOS. Can't strip down my system as that's a 5800X3D, an even newer CPU.

  27. Sometimes... Size Matters

My old Noctua cooler that was purchased almost 10yrs ago for a small form factor HTPC case is being retired in favour of a larger cooler that would keep temps lower and make the system more efficient as I don't need to underclock the CPU anymore.

At least... that was the plan until I dropped the CPU and bent the pins, and had to buy a new one.

New CPU (5600G) has onboard graphics, so larger cooler is even more essential now.

  31. Got my new 32GB of RAM today and plugged it right in. I now have 48GB in total! Finally my PC doesn’t die on me when trying to run a game server and the game at the same time!!! Woo-hoo!

  32. I'm looking at upgrading my PC to a solid state drive. Yes, I still live on a hard disk drive.

I plan to buy a Crucial SSD eventually. Crucial has a compatibility database that shows their RAM and SDD products that work with my Dell Inspiron model.

It shows the SSD I want, but with no heatsink. The compatible parts list doesn't list the version with heatsink as compatible.

Maybe they just don't list it because they think heatsink is superfluous on my model?

  34. The price of internal data storage for my computer has fallen greatly.

I can't afford to replace the 14TB HDD's in my mediaserver. But I can now get 4TB SSD's for around what a 1TB cost me a few years ago.

Tempted to replace the two 3TB HDD's in my main system with two 4TB SSD's
