@steve @Ruth_Mottram reading this on the eurostar on the way back from #PASC24 - I'm lucky to have an institute/funder that is open to my decision not to fly and my views of hypocrisy as a climate scientist. IMO We need more pressure and willingness from funders, institutes, and group leaders to encourage this, especially from those who can afford to do so.
I also find it a much more pleasurable way to travel, especially today seeing the high alps give way to lake Geneva then Rhône valley.

I recently chaired a minisymposium on interfacing #machinelearning with #physics-based models at the #PASC24 conference for scientific computing.
Afterwards I was interviewed for my thoughts on the topic which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnxGLlmVfYw
Slides from my talk are online here: https://jackatkinson.net/slides/PASC24

Talking about joining open-source software foundations at #PASC24:
Elaine Raybourn (from https://corsa.center) leading a panel of minisymposium speakers, with Stefano Zampini (talked about PETSc and @NumFOCUS),
@tgamblin (talked about Spack and HPSF), François Mazen (talked about Kitware) -

Delighted to confirm that my minisymposium at #PASC24 on "Interfacing Machine Learning with Physics-Based Models" has been approved.
We will hear from those using #ML with numerical models in fields from #climate to materials science about the challenges they face and solutions. An exciting area of progress.
Speakers from academia (CASTEP, York Uni), industry (Smartsim, HPE) and in-between (RSE, Uni of Cambridge) with an 'open panel' for community discussion and sharing.
See you there!

More good news (for me, anyway): I will also be presenting our source-to-source translation tool #Loki at #PASC24 in another mini-symposium that discusses software engineering solutions to bridge the gap between the CPU- or vector-processor based supercomputers operational at most met services, and the accelerated #HPC systems that we target and which are operated on behalf of #EuroHPC.

#PASC24 Mini-Symposium acceptance notifications have been sent out. Both of my proposals have been accepted and I'm looking forward to a great conference in Zurich.
The first session is co-hosted with Claudia Frauen from #DKRZ and is entitled "Towards km-scale weather and climate simulations on (pre-)exascale HPC systems". It will feature presentations on ICON (recently open-sourced) and @ECMWF's IFS, including details from the model deployment for #DestinE, and the EarthWorks project.
