Project of the day: teach the Openspot about a few more wifi hotspots, so that I can more easily set up successfully when I'm on the go.

I did this half-heartedly once upon a time and then completely forgot what I did, so this time I'm do a writeup of the results and post it somewhere I can find it again, just so that future me will have a fighting chance.

(If memory serves, the documentation was pretty good and the setup was not too hard.)

I am so happy that I have the OpenSpot hotspot. It was the very first hardware that I bought (together with a Yaesu FT-5D) directly after I held the license in my hands and I am still amazed to have such a small and powerful device that allows me to operate all digital modes so easily and from all places world wide.

I am QRV on DMR TG 26223 (D23 Chaoswelle) since a couple days now and already had some very nice QSO’s there. It's amazing to see how many people have this talk group in their scan list and answer a CQ call. And I am still in love with my OpenSpot 4 hotspot. This little thing is a door to the (ham radio) world in my pocket.

The most compact digital radio setup I can think of for bicycle mobile operations would be #DMR based. Throw a hotspot + battery in a backpack or saddle bag, use a DMR HT to talk.

From the looks of it, @W8HF and @do1mj both have #OpenSpot devices which look ideal for this as an all-in-one, minimum hassle, ready to go solution.

The other option is a DIY #MMDVM system. I know that I really don't want to just chuck my Pi 0 existing hotspot in my backpack, too likely to break in transit.

Here is a copy of my email from January 2022 to SharkRF explaning the "problem" and suggesting a possible "solution". I think the way they finally implemented it is much better than the idea that I had because everyone has a Smartphone anyway.

Yes, just received my new Openspot4 Pro ham radio hotspot today! And it has PTT support now, which is the most important new feature for me, compared to the Openspot3 (a feature which I suggested to the Openspot guys last year). It allows to send and receive audio directly via my Smartphone over Wifi (no radio necessary). I can just throw the little device into my backpack and be QRV with my phone at all times. Super cool! 🥳
