It was a simple trick. Comparing git commit SHAs are way faster with git ls-remote than git clone & git rev-base on medium+ repositories.

Not to add to the scope creep, but if it'll help your idea, maybe not all bad: there is such thing as stencils in #OpenBlocks (#Minecraft mod), and you can do a variety of granular graphics with those, combining with colors.
